Biking to work in Miami. Final technical report

Description: The objective of the project was to produce and distribute a guide to commuting by bicycle in the Miami metropolitan area. The area is uniquely suited to bicycling because of its pleasant year-round climate and relatively flat topography. Biomedical applications of digital autoradiography with a MWPC

Description: A Multiwire Proportional Chamber (MWPC) was used as a ..beta../sup -/ radioactivity detector in biological and medical applications. Two different kinds of experiments were performed: the study of variations in the ability of cell clones to incorporate a radioactive precursor of DNA biosynthesis (/sup 3/H-thymidine) and the regional carbohydrate consumption in myocardial tissue by means of a deposit tracer of glucose metabolism (/sup 3/H-deoxyglucose).

BNL program in support of LWR degraded-core accident analysis

Description: Two major sources of loading on dry watr reactor containments are steam generatin from core debris water thermal interactions and molten core-concrete interactions. Experiments are in progress at BNL in support of analytical model development related to aspects of the above containment loading mechanisms. Bolometer for measurements on high-temperature plasmas

Description: A bolometer has been developed, based on a thin, die-cut platinum grid. It can survive high temperatures and the neutron and gamma radiation expected in the Toroidal Fusion Test Factor (TFTR). Bonded stacked-ring insulator for the Antares electron gun

Description: A large diameter insulator utilizing epoxy bonding which has sufficient mechanical strength to support the 3000 kg cathode/grid assembly was developed. Breakdown of QCD factorization theorems for inclusive reactions

Description: Initial state interactions are shown to violate standard factorization for massive lepton pair production and hadron-induced hard-scattering inclusive reactions order-by-order in QCD perturbation theory. Initial and final state interactions lead to a number of new physical phenomena including K/sub 1/ fluctuations, color correlations, anomalous nuclear number dependence of inclusive cross sections, and induced hadron production in the central rapidity region.
