Representation of Slowing Down Functions in Water by Synthetic Kernels

Description: Fermi, Anderson, and Nagle's experimental distribution of Indium resonance neutrons around a point source of fission neutrons in water has been fitted by analytic expressions which are source functions in the two-group, three-group, Fermi and Christy-Wheeler pile theory. The Christy-Wheeler function (exponential followed by a Gaussian) is the best fit; the two-group function (exponential) is slightly better than the Fermi Gaussian.

Requirements for Auxiliary Stiffeners Attached to Panels Under Combined Compression and Shear

Description: "Panels of aluminum alloy sheets, framed by side and end stiffeners, were subjected to combined loading by means of offset knife edges applying loads to top and bottom end plates with reacting forces against the end plates supplied by laterally acting rollers. The test specimens were 17S-T aluminum alloy shoots 0.040 inch thick in panels of 10-inch width and three different lengths (approximately 10, 26, and 30 inch). Data were obtained for the bowing of transverse and longitudinal ribs of rect… more

Requirements for Unit Fuel-Injection Systems

Description: "A unit injector was operated under various test conditions with a cam outline giving a high rate of plunger displacement. The rate of discharge of the unit injector followed the plunger displacement for the outwardly opening injection valve (open nozzle) except under conditions of high fuel pressures when the effect of fuel compressibility decreased the rate of discharge as the pressure increased. The rate of discharge for the inwardly opening injection valve (closed nozzle) did not directly f… more

Researches on Direct Injection in Internal-Combustion Engines

Description: Report presenting a solution for reducing the fatigue of the Diesel engine by permitting the preservation of its components and, at the same time, raising its specific horsepower to a par with that of carburetor engines, while maintaining for the Diesel engine its perogative of burning heavy fuel under optimum economical conditions. The feeding of Diesel engines by injection pumps actuated by engine compression achieves the required high speeds of injection readily and permits rigorous control … more

Researches on Preliminary Chemical Reactions in Spark-Ignition Engines

Description: "Chemical reactions can demonstrably occur in a fuel-air mixture compressed in the working cylinder of an Otto-cycle (spark ignition) internal-combustion engine even before the charge is ignited by the flame proceeding from the sparking plug. These are the so-called "prelinminary reactions" ("pre-flame" combustion or oxidation), and an exact knowledge of their characteristic development is of great importance for a correct appreciation of the phenomena of engine-knock (detonation), and conseque… more

Researches on the Piston Ring

Description: "In internal combustion engines, steam engines, air compressors, and so forth, the piston ring plays an important role. Especially, the recent development of Diesel engines which require a high compression pressure for their working, makes, nowadays, the packing action of the piston ring far more important than ever. Though a number of papers have been published in regard to researches on the problem of the piston ring, none has yet dealt with an exact measurement of pressure exerted on the cyl… more

Residual Stress Analysis of Overspeeded Disk With Central Hole by X-Ray Diffraction

Description: An X-ray - diffraction analysis of residual surface stresses after plastic strain was introduced in a parallel-sided 3S-O aluminum disk with a central hole by two types of centrifugal overspeed is reported. Both tangential and radial stresses were generally tensile with large local variations near the hole where surface stresses may have been partly superficial. These stresses were both tensile and compressive dependent on the distance from the disk center when mass compression was effected nea… more

The resistance coefficient of commercial round wire grids

Description: From Summary: "The resistance coefficients of commercial types of round wire grids were examined for the purpose of obtaining the necessary data on supercharger test stands for throttling the inducted air to a pressure corresponding to a desired air density. The measurements of the coefficients ranged up to Reynolds numbers of 1000. In the arrangement of two grids in tandem, which was necessary in order to obtain high resistance coefficients with the solidity, that is, mesh density of grid, was… more

The Resistance of Three Series of Flying Boat-Hulls as Affected by Length-Beam Ratio

Description: Report presents correlation of data obtained from several independent length-beam-ratio investigations to determine the general effect of length-beam ratio on the resistance characteristics of three series of flying-boat hulls. An optimum length-beam ratio was found beyond which no further reduction in hydrodynamic resistance occurred. The optimum ratio depended on the hull lines of any given mode series.

Resistance Tests of a 1/16 Size Model of the Hughes-Kaiser Flying Boat, NACA Model 183

Description: Tank tests were made of a hull model of the Hughes-Kaiser cargo airplane for estimates of take-off performance and maximum gross load for take-off. At hump speeds, with the model free to trim, the trim and resistance were high, which resulted in a load-resistance ratio of approximately 4.0 for a gross load coefficient of 0.75. With a 4000,000-lb load, the full size craft may take off in 69 sec over a distance of 5600 ft.

Resonance Absorption in Lumps and Mixtures

Description: The resonance absorption of a lump is described in terms of three components. Calculations of resonance absorption are carried out using the model for the resonance spectrum of uranium recently derived; calculations are also made with variations of this model which involve local fluctuations in level strengths. For metal and oxide lumps the agreement with observation is satisfactory. For dilute mixtures, whose resonance activation was measured by Mitchell, computed values fall 20% to 30% above … more

Resonance Absorption of Uranium in Mixtures

Description: A good determination of the resonance absorption of uranium when admixed with various substances is necessary so that calculations can be made on the efficiency of homogeneous piles. The original experiments along these lines were undertaken by Creutz, Jupnik, and Snyder (C-116) and consisted of experiments on the resonance capture in pure U, UO2, U3O8, and one experiment on capture in a mixture of U3O8 and graphite. These experiments were done at the cyclotron in Princeton and consisted of det… more
