Characteristics of U.S. Rice Fields and Their Effects on Ground Mobility

Description: "The primary objective of this study was to obtain information on the environmental characteristics of rice fields in the United States and the effect of these characteristics on ground mobility for comparison with similar characteristics of rice fields in Southeast Asia as data from the latter become available" (p. vii).

Crater Measurements

Description: From abstract: Based upon the results of Project Pre-Schooner new cratering curves for basalt have been developed. The deepest detonation Charlie, produced a mound of broken rock and earth that had a crater-like depression in its center entirely above the preshot ground surface.

Craters From Four Equal Charges in a Horizontal Square Array

Description: Craters were observed resulting from square arrays of 64-pound charges at various spacings and depths. The closest spacings yielded craters very like those from single 256-pound charges, while wider spacings yielded craters more or less square in shape and with a mound or pier at the center. Generally, the areas so uncovered were greater than for single 256-pound charges, except for very deep charges. Volumes, too, were enhanced by this configuration by as much as a factor of three. If the same… more

The Cumulus and Meteorological Events of the Florida Peninsula During a Particular Summertime Period: Cloud Refractive Index Studies IIIA

Description: The cumulus cloud events of the Florida peninsula that were observed during a 19-day period of photoreconnaissance in August and September 1957 are described and illustrated. The associated meteorological and rainfall events are also described and the intercorrelations among the various observations are pointed out. The study findings revealed that the principal factors governing the cloud and rainfall situations of the different days were (1) the low-level advection of water vapor into the pen… more

Design and Operating Experience of the ESADA Vallecitos Experimental Superheat Reactor (EVESR)

Description: Summary: "The various design features significant to superheat are described for the 12-1/2 MW., 960 psig, 1050° F, steam-cooled, low-enriched, annular-fueled, experimental superheat reactor built by the General Electric Company at the Vallecitos Atomic Power Laboratory. Results obtained during the first six months of full-power operation, on the emergency cooling system, core thermal performance, and pressure vessel temperatures are presented and compared with predictions. Operating experience… more

An Elliptic Integral Computer Package for Magnetic Fields, Forces, and Mutual Inductances of Axisymmetric Systems, and a Versatile Line-Tracing Routine

Description: Report describing a set of high-precision routines for the IBM 7090 that perform efficiently the calculations most often required on axially symmetric magnetic systems. The routines compute the vector potential, field components, and the mixed gradient for current systems and for certain idealized distributions of magnetized matter. The programs for the current systems were developed from a set of six equations in elliptic integrals, which suffice when correlations are fully exploited for all t… more
