The Behavior of Some Solid Materials Under Pile Operating Conditions

Description: Technical report abstract. The present state of knowledge concerning the effect of pile radiation on a variety of solid materials is reviewed. Radiation corrosion will not be a serious hazard for aluminum or stainless steel but it can be for iron or lead if either are exposed to water. Apart from corrosion the principal uncertainty is in regard to the Wigner effect on the behavior of metals. There is at present no ground for optimism regarding the behavior of tuballoy. The effect on alumin… more

Behavior of Transistors in a Magnetic Field

Description: Experiments are described which show that magnetic fields can exert a controlling influence on the operating characteristics of point contact transistors. The effect is especially evident when the transistor is operated in its negative resistance region. The frequency of an oscillator can be varied, or a switch made to trigger by applying a magnetic field to the transistor. Some applications of the principle are suggested; many more are evident.

Bellows Failure in Solids Separation Loop of the HRT Mockup

Description: The failure of the valve bellows would appear to be due to a combination of stress corrosion and crevice corrosion. Stress corrosion occurred as evidenced by the transgranular branched cracking found in the bellows and in the base which which was joined to the bellows. It seems probable that chlorides were present, which, along with the residual stresses present in the bellows assembly, created the necessary conditions for stress corrosion to occur. Crevice corrosion occurred probably due to he… more

The Benchmark Farm Program - A Method for Estimating Irrigation Water Use in Southwest Florida

Description: From introduction: The purpose of this report is to present irrigation water-use data for selected farms and to show how these data are used to estimate total water use for irrigating various crops in southwest Florida. The study area includes all of the Southwest Florida Water Management District and is about 10,000 miles in size (figure 1). The initial emphasis on benchmark farm locations was in Hillsborough, Manatee, and Polk Counties. As the program continues, new farms are being added in s… more

Bend and Impact Tests on Porous Alundum Filter Material

Description: Porous alundum filter plate samples were received for testing to determine the effects of Redox process solutions and conditions on bend and impact properties. Alundum has been suggested as a barrier material for use in the Redox Silica Gel Absorption Column T-101. Consequently, data on possible engineering property changes caused by exposure to separation process solutions and radiation are needed to evaluate the applicability of alundum as a barrier material.

Beneficiation of Iron-Copper Ores from Kasaan Peninsula, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska

Description: Report issued by the Bureau of Mines over studies conducted on the beneficiation of iron-copper ores. As stated in the summary, "this report summarizes the results of laboratory testing of copper-bearing magnetite ore from the Poorman, Rush and Brown, and Copper Center deposits, Kasaan Peninsula, Prince of Wales Island, southeastern Alaska" (p. 1). This report includes tables, maps, and illustrations.

Beneficiation of Monument Number 2 Ore Apache County, Arizona

Description: From introduction: The Monument No. 2 mine is in the Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache County, Arizona, about 20 miles southwest from the San Juan River at Mexican Hat, Utah, and 26 miles southwest from Mexican Water, Arizona. The property has been operated, since its discovery, by Vanadium Corporation of America, which holds a 10-year mining lease, granted through the Interior Department, to 43 acres of ground. History of the discovery of the deposit is vague, but reportedly it was first seen … more

Bentonite Deposits of the Northern Black Hills District Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota

Description: From abstract: The northern Black Hills bentonite mining district includes parts of Crook County, Wyo., Carter County, Mont., and Butte County, S. Dak. Within this district, many beds of bentonite occur interspersed with sedimentary strata of Cretaceous age that have an average total thickness of about 3,000 feet and consist chiefly of marine shale, marl, and argillaceous sandstone. The bentonite beds occur in formations ranging upward from the Newcastle sandstone to the lower part of the Mitte… more

Beryl-bearing Pegmatites in the Ruby Mountains and Other Areas in Nevada and Northwestern Arizona

Description: From abstract: Pegmatite occurs widely in Nevada and northwestern Arizona, but little mining has been done for such pegmatite minerals as mica, feldspar, beryl, and lepidolite. Reconnaissance for beryl-bearing pegmatite in Nevada and in part of Mohave County, Ariz., and detailed studies in the Dawley Canyon area, Elko County, Nev., have shown that beryl occurs in at least 11 districts in the region. Muscovite has been prospected or mined in the Ruby and Virgin Mountains, Nev., and in Mohave Cou… more

Beryl Resources of New Hampshire

Description: From Introduction: "The primary purpose of this work was to summarize and bring up to date the information on beryl resources as gained from investigations during 1942-45, to examine in detail certain beryl-bearing pegmatites discovered and developed in recent years, and to study other pegmatites and groups of pegmatites known or suspected to contain beryl."
