Comparison between calculated and measured loads on wing and horizontal tail in pull-up maneuvers

Description: Report presenting comparisons of measured and calculated loads on the wing and horizontal tail in pull-up maneuvers for six airplanes over a range of weights. Good agreement was obtained between calculated and measured loads under certain circumstances, but the agreement in some cases was only fair, which may be attributed to poor quantitative knowledge of the aerodynamic parameters or to violation of the assumptions on which the method is based.

Comparison of Pitching Moments Produced by Plain Flaps and by Spoilers and Some Aerodynamic Characteristics of an NACA 23012 Airfoil with Various Types of Aileron

Description: Sectional characteristics of airfoil having retractable slotted flap with plain, slot-lip, or retractable ailerons are presented for a large range of aileron deflections. The analysis indicated that pitching moments produced by spoilers were less positive than those produced by plain flaps of equal effectiveness, also that pitching moments created by the spoiler increased less with the Mach number than similar moments produced by plain flaps. Positive values of pitching moment decreased as devi… more

Comparison of Structural Efficiencies of Diagonal-Tension Webs and Truss Webs of 24S-T Aluminum Alloy

Description: "A comparison is made of the structural efficiencies of truss webs of 24S-T aluminum alloy with previously published values of the structural efficiencies of diagonal-tension webs of 24S-T aluminum alloy on the basis of identical allowable stresses. It is concluded that the diagonal-tension beam (web and flanges) can usually be built to be a more efficient beam than the truss beam, even though over a small range the web of a Warren truss beam is slightly more efficient than the web of a diagona… more
