Added Mass and Damping Coefficients for Hexagonal Tube Arrays

Description: An analytical investigation of the fluid coupling effects from an array of hexagonal cylindrical ducts undergoing harmonic oscillations is presented. A closed form solution for the velocity and pressure is obtained under a thin gap approximation for the case of moderate frequencies. From this solution, the usual viscous and inertial fluid coupling coefficients are easily obtained. These analytically derived coefficients indicate a strong dependence upon gap spacing and oscillating Reynolds numb… more

Addendum to a Proposal for ATLAS: a Precision-Ion Accelerator at Argonne National Laboratory, December 1978

Description: This revised proposal for the construction of the Argonne Tandem-Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) is in all essentials the same as the proposal originally presented to NUSAC in March 1978. The only differences worth mentioning are the plan to expand the experimental area somewhat more than was originally proposed and an increased cost, brought about principally by inflation. The outline presented is the same (with minor change in wording) as in the original document, reproduced here for the con… more

Adding memory to the PDP-9

Description: The University of Minnesota has expanded its PDP-9 memory to the full 32 K word capacity of the machine. The expansion from 8 K to 18 K words, entailing the construction of the Extended Memory Interface, was the most difficult part of the project. The interfacing procedure is described. (WHK)

Addition of devolatilization equations to synthane computerized mathematical model. Quarterly report, September 15--December 15, 1978

Description: Six approaches to devolatilization modeling have been reviewed. Two have been selected for further evaluation: the Vand-type model of Anthony and Howard and the diffusion model of Russel et al. The first of these treats particles under kinetic control only. The second includes some mass transfer control along with kinetic control. Behavior of particles in the SYNTHANE process appears to be in the transition region between kinetic and mass transfer control. Work during the next quarter will focu… more

Addition of inexpensive solar air-heaters to a pre-engineered metal building. Final report

Description: At Mississippi State University a research project was begun in 1976 to investigate the use of site-built solar collectors for heating air in poultry houses. The purpose of this work was to design and test a functional air heater solar collector which would be inexpensive to construct and acceptable to poultry producers. The results reported are an extension of the original concept. The basic concept is to use a pre-engineered metal building for the structure and incorporate the solar air heate… more

Additional development of a threshold evaluation system: management plan

Description: The efforts of the DOE Division of Buildings and Community Systems to assume the national leadership for research, development, and demonstration activities related to energy conservation in buildings and community systems are discussed. Contract objectives, presented in Section 2, include the technical goals and schedule and cost objectives of the contract. The organization structures of DOE/BCS and DYNATREND are displayed in Section 3. Moreover, the interface between the organizations is pres… more

Additional media studies for site suitability criteria

Description: Site suitability studies have been made previously at LLL on bedded salt and shale. In the present study domed salt, basalt, and crystalline rock are compared with bedded salt and shale and with each other as possible repositories. The level of effort required to develop models for these media that are similar in quality to those available for bedded salt and shale is evaluated. The effort necessary to develop data bases on the physical and chemical properties comparable to that available for b… more

Additional research on advanced R and D in Japan

Description: The August 1979 status of research and development programs in Japan on high temperature (inlet temperatures to 3000/sup 0/F) gas turbines, on the cleanup of exhaust gases from gas turbines and from coal combustion for steam generation, on fluidized bed combustion, and on fuel cells are summarized. This information was obtained from reports by and interviews of officials in Japanese industrial organizations and research institutes which are conducting the studies. The results show that economic… more

Additional Results Concerning Cross-Section Sensitivity of Tritium Breeding in a Fusion Reactor Blanket: ⁶Li, ⁷Li, and ⁹³Nb

Description: Previous work concerning cross-section sensitivity of the tritium breeding ratio showed ine effects of altering a partial cross section independently of other partial cross sections, permitting the total cross section to rise or fall. The results reported here are mostly for variations made while keeping the total cross section constant. The cases considered were for high and low values of the cross sections for ⁶Li(n,α)t, ⁷Li(n, n'α)t, and for ⁹³Nb(n, 2n) with compensatory changes in other cro… more

Additional studies of geothermal district heating for Mammoth Lakes Village, California. Final report, October 1977--March 1978

Description: A field survey of three heating uses: snow melting, jacuzzi pool heating, and swimming pool heating in Mammoth was undertaken. Based on the results, monthly heating capacity factors were calculated and rough designs were prepared for hydronic district heating for each system. Capital cost estimates were prepared for snow melting, jacuzzi pool heating and swimming pool heating systems using LPG and geothermal district heating. It was determined that incorporation of the three additional heating … more

Additions to generating capacity 1978--1987 for the contiguous United States: as projected by the Regional Electric Reliability Councils in their April 1, 1978 long-range coordinated planning reports to the Department of Energy

Description: Comparison of the 1978 projections of the Reliability Councils with those made the previous year indicates three major changes in electric utility planning: (1) a reduction in total capacity additions for the 10-year planning period, (2) a significant decrease in nuclear additions, and (3) a shift from oil and gas to coal as a source of primary energy. Nuclear capacity continues to far overshadow fossil-fuel capacity in the unit-size range 1000 MW and up, with the reverse true for unit sizes le… more

Additive enhancement of short pulse flashlamps

Description: A key factor in the development of iodine photodisassociation lasers is the improvement of pump lamp efficiency in the 250 to 300 nm pump band at pulsewidths of about 10 ..mu..s. Previous work by Gusinow showed that certain metal additives appeared to enhance pump lamp output in the 250 to 300 nm region by as much as a factor of three. This had been determined by comparing microdensitometer traces of spectrograms of doped and undoped lamps. The principal problems noted with these lamps were a s… more

Adenosine triphosphate concentration in relation to microbial biomass in aquatic systems

Description: Analyses of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) extracted from a sediment community by the sulfuric acid method are complicated by inhibitions from inorganic and organic compounds. Inhibitions by inorganic compounds are reversible while those by organic compounds are irreversible. The primary inhibition by organic compounds results by complexing with acid-soluble fulvic acids which will prevent the detection of as much as 80% of the ATP present in a sample by the luciferin-luciferase reaction. Analyti… more

Adhesion of electrodeposited coatings on U--Ti and Mulberry

Description: Quantitative test data are presented for two etched and plated uranium alloys, U-0.75 Ti and mulberry (U-7.5 Nb, 2.5 Zr). Conical head tensile tests showed that the bond between nickel plating and U--Ti was stronger than that between nickel plating and mulberry. Ring shear tests showed that electroplated nickel coatings are more adherent than other coatings applied to U--Ti. Utilizing a newly developed etchant for mulberry, large cylinders of this material were joined to aluminum and then tensi… more
