ANALYSIS OF SELF-SHUTDOWN BEHAVIOR IN THE SPERT I REACTOR

Description: Presented at the 1958 Winter Meeting of the American Nuclear Society, December 9, 1958. Experimental and theoretical work on the selflimiting response of reactors to step and ramp insertions of reactivity is discussed along with the general characteristics of self-limiting power bursts. The static characteristics of the cores investigated are presented and the techniques of measurement are discussed. Data from step and ramp tests are presented and compared with the predictions of a theoretical … more

Analysis of Tapered Circular Plates

Description: Tables of numerical values of all necessary functions and instructions on their use in the stress analysis of circular plates which have a linear thickness-radius relationship, and which are loaded axisymmetrically, are presented. The analysis is based on the classical smalldeflection theory. Emphasis is placed on plates whose thickness at the inner radius is greater than the thickness at the outer radius. However, a limited number of plates for which the opposite is true may also be analyzed b… more

Analysis of the Heat Generation in the Primary Sodium Pipe Tunnels, Intermediate Heat Exchanger Cells, and the Primary Sodium Fill Tank Vault for the Hallam Nuclear Power Facility (Hnpf)

Description: I. An adequate and conservative calculational method for evaluation of the heat generation distribution in the primary sodium system substructural areas was developed. The method was programed for the IBM 704 and the IBM 709. The results obtained from analysis of the gamma heat generation in the primary sodium pipe tunnels and in the intermediate heat exchanger cells are presented. Calculations are outlined, and gamma attenuation coefficients for concrete, sodium, and steel are given. II. Resul… more

Analytical Program for Processing Stainless Steel Uranium Dioxide Reactor Fuel Elements

Description: Analytical programs have been described for uranium recovery processes for aluminum-uranium and zirconiumuranium reactor fuel elements. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the analytical program for the uranium recovery process involving stainless steel-uranium reactor fuel elements. The recovery process consists of a two step dissolution and the regular liquid-liquid solvent extraction using TBP in kerosene. Sulfuric acid is used to dissolve the stainless steel. As a result of the sulf… more

Annual Report of Research Progress

Description: This technical report constitutes a brief review of the work undertaken, entirely or in part, under the Contract AT(30-1)-1772 with eh United States Atomic Energy Commission. The work published during 1959 is listed at the end of this report and copies of the reprints or reports are attached where available. These investigations have been concerned with the examination of defect production and behavior as it may be observed by high frequency ultrasonic attenuation and velocity (modulus) changes… more

Annual Report. Part A: Studies in K-Capture Positron Branching Ratios. Part B: Search for a Low-Lying O+ State in Gallium-68

Description: K-capture to positron branching ratios were measured in the decay of Na/ sup 22/, Co/sup 58/, and Ga/sup 68/ -- all pure Gamow-Teller emitters, using coincidence scintillation spectrometer techniques. The measured values are 0.105 plus or minus 0.004 for Na/sup 22/, 5.08 plus or minus 0.17 for Co/sup 58/, and 1.28 plus or minus 0.12 and 0.10 plus or minus 0.02 for Ga/sup 58/. From these the Fierz interference terra is computed to be b =--0.004 plus or minus 0.012, -0.004 plus or minus 0.14, --0… more

Anodic Precipitation of Tracer Manganese as Dioxide

Description: Quantitative recovery of carrier‐free 10−9 M manganese (II) is possible from weakly acidic solutions. The use of lead dioxide as either a non-isotopic carrier or a chemical displacing agent makes possible high recoveries from more acidic solutions.

Application of a Modified Debye-Huckel Theory to Fully Ionized Gases

Description: The equations of the Debye-Huckel theory, modified to include quantum statistics, are discussed. It is found that the nonlinear equations used by Cowan and Kirkwcod are not unique and that the nonlinear theory can be formulated in different ways to give different answers. The linearized equations of these alternative formulations are discussed, and the correct form of the linearized theory is established. From the linear theory, the Helmholtz free energy of a slightly degenerate plasma is deriv… more

APPLICATION OF ELECTROLESS-NICKEL BRAZING TO TUBULAR FUEL ELEMENTS FOR THE N.S. SAVANNAH. Status Report

Description: The feasibility of using electroless nickel, a chemical deposit containing about 10 wt.% phosphorous in nickel, as the brazing alloy for assembling tubular stainless steel fuel elements of the type specified in Core I of the N. S. Savannah was investigated. This material was selected primarily because of the ease of braze-metal preplacement by chemical deposition of the alloy on type 304 stainiess steel ferrule spacers, prior to fuelbundle assembly. Brazed joints produced by this method were ge… more

Description: Equipment and techniques for high-pressure high temperature solid-state studies were developed, and some preliminary results for the reaction of uranium oxides with other oxidcs were obtaincd. A new die design was evolved which appears suitable for any work currently contemplated. The maximum capabilities of this new die are as yet undetermined, but its theoretical pressure limit is in excess of 200,000 atm. The die differs from similar equipment in that internal heating of the sample is employ… more
