The Infrared Absorption Spectra of Solutions of Methanol in Carbon Tetrachloride in the Second Harmonic Region

Description: The infrared absorption spectra of solutions of methanol in carbon tetrachloride in the second harmonic region of the OH stretching frequency has been studied with solutions which are 0.006 to the 1.0 mole fraction methanol in carbon tetrachloride at 25° and 45°. The monomer band is formed at 1.39μ, and the broad association band has at least three components at about 1.44, 1.51, and 1.56μ. The concentration and temperature dependence of the area of the association band and of the extension coe… more

Infrared Analysis of n-Hexadecafluoroheptane and Hexadecafluorodimethylcyclohexane

Description: Summary: "By use of infrared spectroscopy come of the impurities in n-hexadecafluoroheptane and hexadecafluorodimethylcyclohexane have been identified and accurate specification analyses have been devised for measuring these impurities. These infrared analytical methods were used as an aid in setting acceptance specifications on the materials and for determining whether production materials met specifications."

An Infrared Cloud Indicator 1: Analysis of Infrared-Radiation Exchange With Tables and Chart for Calibration of the Cloud Indicator

Description: Report presenting a description of an experimental model of a flight instrument that utilizes infrared radiations for detecting and indicating the location of clouds at night. A preliminary investigation is made of data in the scientific literature. A table and chart are developed that make it practical to determine the magnitude of the net exchange of radiation for any particular atmosphere of known composition and distribution of temperature.

Infrared Radiation From Explosions in a Spark-Ignition Engine

Description: This report presents the results of an investigation to determine the variations in intensity and spectral distribution of the radiant energy emitted by the flames during normal and knocking explosions in an engine. Radiation extending into the infrared was transmitted by a window of fluorite, placed either near the spark plug or over the detonation zone at opposite ends of the combustion chamber. Concave, surface-silvered mirrors focused the beam, first at the slit of a stroboscope which opene… more

Infrared Spectra and Structure of the Crystalline Sodium Acetate Complexes of U(VI), Np(VI), Pu(VI), and Am(VI). A Comparison of Metal-Oxygen Bond Distance and Bond fFrce Constant in this Series

Description: Infrared spectra of solid NaXO2(Ac)3, with X=U, Np, Pu, and Am, have been observed. From the symmetric and asymmetric stretching frequencies of the O-X-O groups, approximate X-O force constants have been calculated and were found to decrease in the order kU—O>kNp—O>kPu—O> kAm—O, the respective values being about 0.705, 0.698, 0.675, and 0.612 megadyne/cm. From the cell constants for NaXO2(Ac)3 it is apparent that the X-O bond distance decreases in the same order—RU—O>RNp—O>RPu—O>RAm—O. Thus, a … more

Infrared spectra of 47 dicyclic hydrocarbons

Description: From Summary: "The infrared spectra are presented for 47 dicyclic hydrocarbons consisting of some alkyldiphenylmethanes, alkyldicyclohexylmethanes, alkylnaphthalenes, alkyltetralins, 1,3-diphenyl-2-alkylpropanes and 1,3-dicyclohexyl-2-alkylpropanes. The physical properties of these highly purified compounds are included for reference purposes."

Infrared Spectra of 59 Dicyclic Hydrocarbons

Description: "The infrared spectra are presented for 59 dicyclic hydrocarbons consisting of some diphenylalkanes, dicyclohexyalkanes, alkylbiphenyls and alkylbicyclohexyls ranging from C(sub 12) through C(sub 18). The physical properties of these compounds, which were available in a high state of purity, are tabulated for reference purposes" (p. 1).

The Infrared Spectra Of Marginally Metallic Systems, Sodium-Ammonia Solutions

Description: The sodium-ammonia solution system permits investigation of an array of compositions spanning the transition from non-metallic to metallic bonding. Reflection spectra in the range 1-20 [ ] were measured for solutions of mole ratio 5.5 to 168 [ ] per Na. The dilute solutions show peaks characteristic of the vibrations of ammonia and a strong peak near 1.5 [ ] which is assigned to the solvated [ ] species. Concentrated solutions show high reflectivity over broad wavelength ranges. The results for… more

The infrared spectra of spiropentane methylenecyclobutane and 2-methyl-1-butene

Description: The infrared spectra of spiropentane, methylenecyclobutane, and 2-methyl-1-butene were measured in the region from 3 to 14 microns with a rock salt prism spectrometer of medium dispersion. The pure samples were prepared at the NACA Cleveland Laboratory. The vapors of these three C5 hydrocarbons were investigated at room temperature and at pressures in the range from 80 to 300 millimeters of mercury absolute in a 10-centimeter cell. The spectra were compared with each other and with Ramon spectr… more
