200 Area waste storage study

Description: As a part of the five year budget study requested by HOO-AEC, a study of separations waste storage requirements for this period was made. This study took into consideration the variant estimates of amount of irradiated uranium to be processed, and the goals in the waste reduction research and development program. The conclusions of this study were at variance, to some extent, with prior studies. Interest has been expressed in publication of this study to permit independent assessment of its bas… more

Alkyl Phosphoric Acids as Extraction Agents for Uranium

Description: The recent interest in tributyl phosphate as an extracting solvent for uranium indicated that consideration of n-butyl phosphoric acid for this application might be of interest if some way could be devised to overcome the manipulation and miscibility difficulties. It was found that if the material was placed in any one of a number of carrier solvents, it had a remarkably strong extractive effect on uranyl ion out of acid solutions without a salting agent present.

Altitude Starting Tests of a 1000-Pound-Thrust Solid-Propellant Rocket

Description: Four solid-propellant rocket engines of nominal 1000-pound-thrust were tested for starting characteristics at pressure altitudes ranging from 112,500 to 123,000 feet and at a temperature of -75 F. All engines ignited and operated successfully. Average chamber pressures ranged from 1060 to ll90 pounds per square inch absolute with action times from 1.51 to 1.64 seconds and ignition delays from 0.070 t o approximately 0.088 second. The chamber pressures and action times were near the specificatio… more

Analysis of a liquid-metal turbine-propeller cycle for propulsion of low-speed nuclear- powered aircraft

Description: From Introduction: "The intermediate subsonic speed range is considered and the liquid-metal turbine-propeller cycle discussed in this report. In this report, compressor pressure ratio, heat-exchanger air-inlet Mach number, and turbine-inlet temperature were optimized for maximum engine net thrust per engine-plus-heat exchanger weight (minimum airplane gross weight) for a range of heat-exchanger effective wall temperature."
