Adaptor for measuring principal strains with Tuckerman strain gage

Description: An adapter is described which uses three Tuckerman optical strain gages to measure the displacement of the three vortices of an equilateral triangle along lines 120 degrees apart. These displacements are substituted in well-known equations in order to compute the magnitude and direction of the principal strains. Tests of the adaptor indicate that principal strains over a gage length of 1.42 inch may be measured with a systematic error not exceeding 4 percent and a mean observational error of the order of + or minus 0.000006. The maximum observed error in strain was of the order of 0.00006. The directions of principal strains for unidirectional stress were measured with the adaptor with an average error of the order of 1 degree.

The aerodynamics of a wind-tunnel fan

Description: The vortex blade-element theory modified to apply to an axial fan working in a duct is reviewed. Thrust and power coefficients for a fan are identified with the corresponding coefficients for airplane propellers. The relation of pressure produced by the fan to the blade-element coefficients is developed. The distribution of axial velocity of fluid through a fan is assumed to be controlled by the fan itself. The radial distribution of tangential velocity imported by the fan to fluid moving through the fan is shown to be independent of the axial-velocity distribution. A nondimensional coefficient, designated the rotation constant, is introduced. This constant is based solely upon design information. The use of the rotation constant in simplifying the design of a fan for a specific operating condition is demonstrated. Based on the use of the rotation constant, a graphical method is outlined by which the performance of a given fan in a given wind tunnel may be predicted and by which the distributions of axial velocity of the fluid through the fan under various operating conditions may be established.

The aileron as an aid to recovery from the spin

Description: As part of a general investigation by the NACA of factors that affect the spin, the use of the aileron as an aid to recovery from the spin was studied. Tests of 10 different models, covering a wide range of mass distribution, were made in the NACA free-spinning tunnel to determine the effects of a large downward deflection of the outboard aileron and of normal angular deflections of the ailerons upon recovery characteristics. The results indicate that the direction of aileron setting, with or against the spin, which will aid recovery from the spin depends upon the airplane weight distribution. For monoplanes and for biplanes with lower-wing ailerons, ailerons with the spin will be favorable when the weight is distributed chiefly along the fuselage (single-engine airplanes) and ailerons against the spin will be favorable when the weight is distributed chiefly along the wings (multi engine airplanes). Downward movement of the outboard aileron through a large angle will not always be effective in aiding recovery, the effectiveness of such a movement also being dependent upon the weight distribution of the airplane.
