2$sup 0$K vacuum pumping system for Baseball II

Description: A vacuum pumping system that provides a cryo surface for condensing and freezing of H/sub 2/ gas is described. A closed-loop vacuum system was designed and built at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory to pump down the neutralizer LH/sub e/ dewar with a volurae of 350 l and the lambda point dewar with a LH/sub e/ volume of 250 l. Both of these dewars can be pumped down simultaneously or one at a time. 100% of the H/sub e/ gas is recovered free of contaminations. The vacuum pump can handle 340 SCFM of … more

11 - FFTF-LMFBR seal test program, October-December 1973

Description: The objectives of this program are to: (1) conduct static and dynamic tests to demonstrate or determine the mechanical performance of full-size (cross section) FFTF fuel transfer machine and reactor vessel head seals intended for use in a sodium vapor - inert gas environment, (2) develop and demonstrate these FFTF seals or new seal configurations to provide acceptable fission product and cover gas retention capabilities at LMFBR Demonstration Plant operating environmental conditions other than … more

200 amp Neutral Beam Source

Description: Recent efforts in controlled fusion experiments have indicated the need for large neutral-beam sources to provide an initial plasma for further plasma buildup, for use as a stoking source to makeup losses, or for plasma heating. Experiments now operating or envisioned for the near future anticipate the need for kilo-amp neutral beams in the 20-keV energy range and higher. These sources will be required to focus into relatively small-volume targets, have good gas efficiency, and use a minimum of… more

241-T-106 tank leak investigation

Description: On June S, 1973, the 241-T-106 underground liquid waste storage tank, located on the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission's Hanford reservation, was confirmed as leaking. It was predicted that the leaked waste would be retained by the dry sediments well above the water table. A study was instigated to confirm this prediction. Results show the deepest penetration observed was 27 meters below the ground surface or 35 meters above the water table (approximately S7 and 116 feet, respectively). Based on t… more

250-Kg Mirror Coil Development for the Linear Scyllac Experiment

Description: The linear Scyllac theta-pinch machine required mirror coils on each end of the 5-m-long lead coil, which would give mirror ratios of two to three times the 100-kG main coil magnetic field. A pulsed magnetic field of 250 RG was established as a design goal for the mirror coils. Several different designs were evaluated using the 178- kJ, 80-kV Scyllac prototype capacitor bank. Calculations were made to determine the coil geometry for each 250-kG cotl design. A copper-lined, steel-jacketed coil, … more

1964 computer run on a laser-imploded capsule

Description: WAZER Alchemy 7b (WA-7b) is a WAZER calculation of a laser-driven micro-implosion of a spherical capsule consisting of a thin gold pusher surrounded by a thick (frozen) deuterium ablator. The properties of the target capsule and the shape of the laser pulse used to irradiate it are described.

2XII-B pulse coil design

Description: The design of the 2XII-B pulse coil system is presented. Development of the coil geometry is given as well as the results of magnetic field calculations. A discussion of the forces developed by this high-energy coil set and the electrical stress on the magnet insulation is presented. The results of materials selection for both the coil insulation and structure are included, and also a description of the fabrication procedure. (auth)

2XII Thomson scattering system

Description: A Thomson-scattering system using a 6-joule Q-switched ruby laser and an eight-channel polychromator was constructed and employed to measure electron temperatures and densities at the center of the 2XII mirror confinement experiment. This report discusses experimental considerations used to guide design, construction, alignment, and operation of the Thomson-scattering system. (auth)

Absorption of electromagnetic rays near the critical density. Quarterly progress report, June 1, 1973--September 1, 1973

Description: An experimental study of the interaction of high-intensity ruby laser radiation with hydrogen gas in a free-jet is described. In these experiments both laser intensity and the plasma frequency can be varied. By monitoring several parameters, including incident and reflected power, x-ray emission and the kinematics of plasma growth, the existence of an anomalous threshold for coupling radiation into plasma energy should be determinable. A discussion of the experiment, including a design drawing … more

Absorption of electromagnetic waves near the critical density. Annual report, 1 December 1972--30 November 1973

Description: The program is an experimental study of the interaction of highintensity ruby laser radiation with hydrogen gas in a free-jet. In these experiments, both laser intensity and the plasma frequency can be varied. By monitoring several parameters, including incident and reflected power, x-ray emission and the kinematics of plasma growth, the existence of an anomalous threshold for coupling radiation into plasma energy should be determinable. A discussion of the status of the Calspan experiment and … more
