Anisotropic Elastic Scattering of Neutrons

Description: In an elastic collision the neutron loses part of its kinetic energy to the nucleus with both the kinetic and momentum of the system being conserved. However, for many elements the scattering is not isotropic in the center-of-mass system at the higher neutron energies. Many of the present reactor multigroup codes include anisotropic scattering at the high neutron energies, while many others assume isotropic scattering at all energies. In order to consider some of the effects of including anisot… more

Annihilation of Nuclei by Displacement Spikes

Description: At an Octcber, 1957 meeting between USAEC, AECL, and Bettis personnel, the theoretical aspects of the radiation effects on the gamma red and alpha + gamma /sub 2/ transformation in U-Nb alloys were discussed. A theoretical model is presented which involves the annihilation of nuclei of the new phase by the action of displacement spikes. (W.D.M.)

Application of a Windshield-Display System to the Low-Altitude Bombing Problem

Description: From Introduction: "The design and flight evaluation of an airborne target simulator for use in tracking studies of fighter-type airplanes equipped with optical gunsights have recently been reported (ref. 1). In this equipment the target airplane was represented by a movable dot of light projected on the windshield of the test airplane."

AN APPLICATION OF GAME THEORY TO SPECIAL WEAPONS EVALUATION

Description: A metbed was introduced for combining the techniues of classical Lanchester theory of combat with those of game theory toward the end of selecting optimal strategies in combat with special weapons. In the application of this method to the example in which only the defender had atomic weapons,. it was showm that the attacker always chose either to disperse his troops the maximum amount or not to disperse his troops at all. The defender always chose to employ a mixed strategy consisting of the we… more

The application of matrix methods to coordinate transformations occurring in systems studies involving large motions of aircraft

Description: Report presenting the method and advantages of matrix algebra in setting up the geometric aspects of problems of airplane motion. The paper is divided into two parts. The first is about the aspects of matrix algebra required for use in orthogonal transformations and the other shows how to use orthogonal transformations in matrix form by applying them in several examples.

Application of obliquely mounted strain gage to measurement of residual stresses in disks

Description: Report presenting a method by which the residual stress distribution in a disk can be determined with the aid of the obliquely mounted strain gage when the directions of the principal stresses are radial and tangential. The strain gages are mounted in such a way as to make them sensitive only to the tangential stresses in the disk. Results regarding cutting procedure, accuracy of the method, and an independent check of the method are required.

The Application of Pulsed Neutron Sources to Criticality Measurements

Description: Abstract: Experimentally measured promp-neutron decay constants for sub-critical systems are of considerable value as normalization data for calculations of prompt-neutron time constants. A method of measuring these decay constants with a pulsed neutron source, neutron detector and multi-channel time-delay analyzer has been developed and used on a number of fast-spectrum subcritical systems. An analysis of this method based on the one-energy group, one-delayed-neutron group reactor kinetic equa… more

Applications of power spectral analysis methods to maneuver loads obtained on jet fighter airplanes during service operations

Description: Report presenting power spectral densities of normal load factor obtained for two service operational training flights of a Republic F-84G airplane and three service operational training flights of a North American F-86A airplane in order to indicate the load-factor frequency content and possible uses of power spectral methods in analyzing maneuver load data. Results regarding the spectra of the two different planes, an analytical representation of maneuver load spectrum, and probability distri… more

Applied Health Physics Semi-Annual Report : July 1956 - December 1956

Description: This semi-annual report of the Applied Health Physics Section of the Health Physics Division provides both narrative and quantitative descriptions of area air monitoring activities, fallout activity, rain water analyses, Clinch River and White Oak Creek analyses, background radiation monitoring, and monitoring of the work and protective garments laundry. Measurements for gamma and beta activity are reported in millicuries/cubic centimeter. The report does not provide information on specific rad… more

APPR-1 Type Absorber Rod Irradiation Test -- Irradiation Request ORNL MTR-29

Description: In order to evaluate the behavior of an APPR type absorber rod, an irradiation test program has been established. Approximately 21 more samples are planned for testing under this request. The request proposes testing a full size APPR-1 type control rod in the MTR. The objective of the test is to better evaluate the neutron absorbing material proposed for the APPR-1 control rod.
