Initial Conditions for the Dynamic Pinch

Description: Abstract: "The experimental formation of the dynamic pinch has been an art based upon available electrical condensers, available glass and quartz tubing and an empirically determined gas pressure range. This report attempts to correlate some of this empirical information with the processes of ionization, insulator wall heating, magnetic field penetration, and shock hydrodynamics."

Initial Performance Investigation of Pentaborane Fuel in Free-Flight Ram-Jet Engine

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation with a ramjet utilizing pentaborane fuel in order to evaluate promising high-energy fuels under actual flight conditions. During descent, the engine accelerated to a Mach number of 1.45 when a flame-out believed due to spray-bar failure took place. Results regarding time history, pressure recovery, thrust, thrust-minus-drag, and drag coefficient, and comparison with hydrocarbon fuel are provided.

Injection Principles for Liquid Oxygen and Heptane Using Nine-Element Injectors in an 1800-Pound-Thrust Rocket Engine

Description: Memorandum presenting a study of six nine-element injectors for the liquid-oxygen-heptane propellant system in an 1800-pound-thrust rocket engine. The characteristic velocities for comparable injector types were about the same as those obtained from the two-element study. The level of performance was generally higher for the nine-element injectors.

Injection Trajectories and Beam Matching for the Cambridge Electron Accelerator

Description: "ABS>Injection trajectories were calculated for different injection conditions for the Cambridge Electron Accelerator, considering also the effect of magnetic fringing fields. The general problem of matching the emittance of the linac to the acceptance of the synchrotron in the transversal phase space is considered, and it is shown that this can be done by a set of two quadrupole lenses. In order to eliminate rudial betatron oscillations due to energy deviations of the injected particles, a pul… more

Instrument Flight Trials with Helicopter Stabilized in Attitude About Each Axis Individually

Description: Note presenting flight investigations of single-axis attitude stabilization during low-speed instrument approaches. A single-rotor helicopter that had been modified to include an electronic control system was used in the investigation. Results regarding heading stabilization, pitch stabilization, and roll stabilization are provided.

An integral solution to the flat-plate laminar boundary-layer flow existing inside and after expansion waves and after shock waves moving into quiescent fluid with particular application to the complete shock-tube flow

Description: Report presenting a solution to the unsteady two-dimensional laminar boundary-layer flow inside centered expansion waves and behind both centered expansion waves and shock waves using an extension of the Karman-Pohlhausen method. The Prandtl unsteady-boundary-layer equations are also integrated normal to the surface bounding the flow and are transformed into a conical coordinate system. The solution to the two-dimensional unsteady laminar boundary layer existing at all points in an air-air shoc… more

The Interaction of Aqueous Be(NO3)2 Solutions With Some Organic Acids

Description: 1. A study was made of the interaction between beryllium ions (Be(NO3)2) and oxalic, malonic, succinic, lactic, citric, maleic, and salicylic acids by determining the H+ ion concentration. It was established that the degree of interaction between Be2+ ions and organic acids can be arranged in the following series: oxalate = malonate > salicylate > maleate + citrate > tartrate > succinate > lactate. 2. The inability of the Be2+ ion to form only slightly disassociated compounds in the reaction wi… more

Interface Thermal Conductance of Twenty-Seven Riveted Aircraft Joints

Description: Note presenting testing of twenty-seven structural joint specimens of 2024-T3 and 2024-T4 aluminum alloy consisting of a T-stringer riveted to a 10- by 10-inch skin surface under simulated aerodynamic heating with no external loading applied. Rivet size and pitch were found to influence the conductance but the rivet materials tested had no observable effect.

Interference Effects of Fuselage-Stored Missiles on Inlet Duct Model of an Interceptor-Type Aircraft at Mach Numbers 1.5 to 1.9

Description: Memorandum presenting the effect of missile armament on the performance of an interceptor-type aircraft model at Mach numbers 1.5, 1.7, and 1.9 and at angles of attack up to 19 degrees. The aircraft model was characterized by triangular-shaped normal-shock inlets located at wing roots. Results regarding force measurements, effect of armament on inlet-duct performance, fuselage boundary-layer survey, and total-pressure contours at inlet throat and diffuser exit are provided.

Interim report on tests simulating the transient response of individual process tubes to inadvertent plugging

Description: Current Panellit protection procedures, termed instability limits, come from calculations based on steady state experiments. However, the actual conditions in a process tube following a plugging occurrence sufficient to cause unstable flow are transient rather than steady state, and cannot be determined with great precision except by transient state experimentation. As a result, a program was initiated by the thermal Hydraulics Operation of HLO to perform a series of transient heat transfer exp… more

Description: This report summarizes the work done to date on the development of an epoxy resin bonded explosive (HMX). The original target values have been satisfied and further investigations will be on a semi-pilot plant scale. The following characteristics have been determined on laboratory specimens. Internal performance of several auxiliary air inlets immersed in a turbulent boundary layer at Mach numbers of 1.3, 1.5, and 2.0

Description: Internal performance of normal-shock rectangular, circular, and scoop inlets and of external-compression inlets experimentally obtained with varying immersion in a turbulent boundary layer. Recoveries varied from about 95 percent of theoretical in the free stream to 80 percent with complete immersion, while the corresponding mass flows were usually above 95 percent of theoretical. Turning of the flow through 10 degrees caused losses in pressure recovery of 0.03 to 0.07. External compression did… more

Internal Performance of Several Divergent-Shroud Ejector Nozzles with High Divergence Angles

Description: From Summary: "Nine divergent-shroud ejector configurations were investigated to determine the effect of shroud divergence angle on ejector internal performance. Unheated dry air was used for both the primary and secondary flows. The decrease in the design-point thrust coefficient with increasing flow divergence angle (angle measured from primary exit to shroud exit) followed very closely a simple relation involving the cosine of the angle. This indicates that design-point thrust performance fo… more
