Charts for estimating the effects of short-period stability characteristics on airplane vertical-acceleration and pitch-angle response in continuous atmospheric turbulence

Description: Report presenting charts for estimating the effects of variations in short-period stability characteristics of a rigid airplane on its root-mean-square vertical-acceleration and pitch-angle response to continuous atmospheric turbulence. A comparison of the root-mean-square vertical-acceleration response of an airplane free to be disturbed in vertical and pitching motion with that of an airplane free to be disturbed only in vertical motion indicates that the responses are similar for a nearly cr… more

Chemical Cleaning and Storage of the HRT Steam and Closed Cooling Water Systems

Description: A 10% phosphoric acid solution contain 0.2% "Rodine 45" inhibitor is recommended to be used for the chemical cleaning of the HRT seam and closed colling water systems. Wet storage is recommended for both of these systems. The steam system is to be stored with steam condensate containing 100 ppm hydrazine, and closed cooling water system is to be stored with steam condensate containing 1000 ppm potassium chromate.

The combinations of thermal and load stresses for the onset of permanent buckling in plates

Description: A simple and practical method for evaluating the onset of permanent buckling in plates in the presence of combined thermal and compressive load stresses is outlined. A particular application of the method shows reasonable agreement with tests of 17-7 PH stainless-steel square tubes. The results indicate that the compressive load stress which the plate can support at the onset of permanent buckling is substantially reduced as the temperature difference of the plate and adjoining members increase… more

A comparison of carrier approach speeds as determined from flight tests and from pilot-operated simulator studies

Description: Report presenting a simplified analog simulator that can be used to predict the minimum comfortable approach speeds that could be used in carrier landings for airplanes that are limited by their ability to control altitude. Predicted speeds from initial tests on several planes are compared with values from flight tests in order to indicate the validity of simulator results.

Compressible Laminar Boundary Layer Over a Yawed Infinite Cylinder With Heat Transfer and Arbitrary Prandtl Number

Description: Note presenting the equations for development of the compressible laminar boundary layer over a yawed infinite cylinder. The results indicate that the effect of yaw on the heat-transfer coefficient at the stagnation line depends markedly on the free-stream Mach number.

Continuous dissolution of uranium fuel elements in a tower dissolver

Description: A continuous process for the dissolution of irradiated fuel elements is a potential means of solving criticality limitations in the dissolution of enriched uranium slugs and of achieving higher dissolver capacity in the Redox and Purex Plants. This report summarizes development studies aimed at determination of dissolution rates, effluent compositions, and effects of changes in operating conditions on mercury-catalyzed dissolution in a tower-type unit.

Cross Sections for OCUSOL-A Program

Description: The OCUSOL-A program (ORNL-CF-57-6-4) for Univac is a modification of the Eyewash (ORNL-1925) multi-group, multi-region reactor code. The group=energy-lethargy-temperature relationship are given in Table A. The element code numbers are given in Table B. The cross sections now on the sigma-tape are given in tables in the Appendix numbered with the element code number. This technical report explains the bases for choosing the cross sections.

Design and Engine Evaluation of a Semistrut Corrugated Air-Cooled Turbine Blade for Operation at a Tip Speed of 1300 Feet Per Second

Description: Report presenting an improved air-cooled turbine blade that was described, stress-analyzed, and evaluated in a full-scale turbojet engine. The blade consists of a sheet-metal outer shell and an internal strut of partial blade length. The effect on blade rupture life of varying outer-shell thickness, strut length, blade temperature distribution, and corrugation pitch and amplitude are provided.

Design and experimental evaluation of a light-weight turbine-wheel assembly

Description: Report presenting lightweight design concepts, which were developed and tested in a full-scale turbine wheel with a tip diameter of 34.3 inches and a tip speed of 1190 feet per second. It consisted of a rotor of two thin alloy disks attached with spacers and bolts and hollow turbine blades. Testing indicated that it would be particularly applicable to an expendable missile engine.

Determination of Trace Amounts of Sulfur in Fluoride Salts

Description: A method has been developed for the determination of total sulfur in fluoride salts using the methylene blue procedure. Reduction of sulfate to hydrogen sulfide is achieved through the use of a new reducing mixture consisting of stannous chloride dissolved in concentrated phosphoric acid. The new mixture is effective on microgram amounts of sulfate and offers a major advantage over the red phosphorous reducing mixtures in that larger samples may be taken for analysis. The procedure has been app… more

DEVELOPMENT OF A BATCH PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF A ZrO$sub 2$-UO$sub 2$ SOLID SOLUTION

Description: A batch process on the 2 kg scale was developed for the production of ZrO/sub 2/--UO/sub 2/ solid solution in the weight proportion of about 4 to 1. The product is tetragonal ZrO/sub 2/-- UO/sub 2/ solution, with no UO/sub 2/ lines showing on the x-ray powder diffraction patterns. The solid solution is prepared from a precipitate of Zr(OH)/sub 4/-- (NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/U /sub 2O/sub 7/ which is filtered, dried, milled, screened to minus 325 mesh, and heated at 9OO deg C in H/sub 2/ for 4 hours. The Disposal of Power Reactor Waste Into Deep Wells

Description: For various reasons it is not possible to leave the uranium or other nuclear fuel in a power reactor until all of it has been "burned up" by fission. In the case of liquid fuel (homogeneous) reactors a small part is continuously bled out, purified and returned. In the case of solid fuel reactors, fuel elements are periodically removed, reprocessed and the "unburned" fuel put back into service. In both cases the purification produces wastes which contain radioactive fission products and transura… more

Dissociation of H₂⁺ by Photons

Description: Abstract: "A measurement was made of the dissociation of vibrationally-excited H2+ ions by photons having quantum energy in the vicinity of 4 e.v. The calculated cross section from theory is 3 x 10-(-18) cm-2. The experimental result is 10-(-17) cm-2; a factor of 10 uncertainty is present because the photon intensity was unknown by that factor."
