A Numerical Integration Scheme for Problems Involving Contour Representations

Description: The definition of the Lebesgue integral is used to develop a numerical integration method in which the integral is evaluated directly from a contour plot of the function. It is useful in working from weather maps, potential surfaces, etc., but was particularly designed to assist in reducing blast diffraction space-time diagrams to simple, meaningful quantities.

On spectral analysis of runway roughness and loads developed during taxiing

Description: Report presenting the application of the techniques of generalized harmonic analysis to the airplane taxiing problem. Some previous results on runway roughness are reviewed and some results obtained from taxiing tests of a large airplane are given. The use of spectral techniques was found to be a rather concise way of presenting the characteristics of runway roughness.

On the Mechanism of Buckling of a Circular Cylindrical Shell Under Axial Compression

Description: The present paper deals with the buckling of a circular cylindrical shell under axial compression from the viewpoint of energy and the characteristics of deformation. It is shown first, both theoretically and experimentally, that the reason why the buckling of a cylindrical shell is quite different from that of a flat plate is attributable to the existence of a nearly developable surface far apart from the original cylindrical surface. Description: Memorandum presenting a supersonic wind-tunnel investigation of the origin and distribution of store interference performed in the 4- by 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel at Mach number 1.6. Separate forces on a store, a fuselage, a swept wing, and a swept-wing-fuselage combination were measured. The configuration investigated simulated a heavy bomber airplane with a large store or nacelle with frontal area equivalent to a twin-engine nacelle.

Oxidation of Metals Subjected to a Linear Temperature Increase: Cubic and Logarithmic Laws

Description: The total amount of oxidation which occurs up to a given time when a metal is subjected to a continuously increasing temperature has been studied by Fasseli and coworkers. A constant rate of increase as well as the linear and parabolic oxidation laws were assumed. The present report extends the analysis to include to the cubic and logarithmic growth laws. The notation for the nth order exponential integral functions which is used here simplifies the equations and the calculations.

Plastic Flow During Extrusion of Tubing

Description: Abstract: "A study of plastic flow during the extrusion of tubing was made by extruding colored Plasticine billets in a small-scale extrusion press. Decreasing the included angle of the conical die and tapering the ram end of the billet decreased the amount of coextrusion of the backer block into the tubing, lubricating the billet also decreased coextrusion."

Description: From Summary: "A preliminary experimental investigation is being conducted to determine the feasibility of preventing rain from impinging on aircraft windshields by means of high-velocity jet-air blast. Production of Ionium From a Pitchblende Residue

Description: This document discusses high radiation levels which are being encountered in the reactor discharge areas during outages. Rear face dosage rates in B, D, F, DR and H Reactors now average 100 mr per hour. These high radiation rates seriously jeopardize desirable projects which require extensive work on the rear face of these reactors.
