Accelerator Development Department Internal Report

Description: In this report we present solutions of the design problem in which a system of quadruple lenses is required to carry a particle beam from given focal lines in the x and y planes to other given focal lines. Particular attention will be given to the case of the anastigmatic lens system which takes a beam from one focal point to another focal point. Since the general problem is almost impossibly complicated a simplification is introduced by breaking the lens system into two parts. The first part o… more

Basic Studies of the Separation of Uranium Hexafluoride from Mixtures Containing Chlorine Trifluoride and Hydrogen Fluoride

Description: Processes for the conversion of uranium compounds or uranium metal to uranium hexafluoride ordinarily involve the use of a powerful fluorinating agent. Elemental fluorine is used when the scale of operations justifies the construction of a fluorine generating plant, but for smaller operation the use of the interhalogens of fluorine has definite advantages. These compounds provide a high concentration of fluorinating power at moderate temperatures and pressures and are more easily stored and tra… more

Description: The interfacial area in a pulse column was measured using an alpha ,n reaction. Externally mixing atomizing nozzles were tried unsuccessfully in the DRUHM reactor. A Fluorox run gave a UF/sub 6/ recovery of 72.9% of the theoretical yield and rate constants of 18.6 hr/sup -1/ and 32.9 hr/sup -1/. Satisfactory operation of a flame calcination apparatus was demonstrated with methyl alcohol feed slurries of thorium oxalate, with ethylorthosilicate treated ThO/sub 2/, and with 650 tained C fired ThC… more

[Chemistry Thesis] Part 1: The Spectra of Some Aliphatic Aldehydes and Their Monodeutero Derivatives,

Description: BS>An investigation of the infrared and near-ultraviolet spectra of three aliphatic aldchydes and their monodeutero derivatives is described. The infrared spectra of the acetaldehydes (CH/sub 3/CHO and CH/sub 3/CDO) were in agreement with work reported recently. A few new bands are reported and discussed. The infrared spectra of C/sub 2/H/sub 5/CHO, C/sub 2/H/sub 5/CDO, C/ sub 3/H/sub 7/CHO, and C/sub 3/H/sub 7/CDO at 450 to 4000 cm/sup -1/ were observed, and an assignment of the observed bands… more

[Chemistry Thesis] Part 2: High Intensity Light Sources

Description: A stable carbon arc operated in controlled atmosphere is described. The arc was designed to serve as a light source during lifetime studies of the B/sup 2/ SIGMA state of the CN molecule. The CN radiation from the plasma of the arc was investigated and found to have a brightness temperature of 5500 icient laborato K at lambda 3883 A. This is considerably higher than an estimate of the value required for lifetime measurements. The stability of the carbon arc under various conditions is discussed… more

Comparison of the value of four ``corner`` rods the poison spline system for the ``K`` Reactors

Description: The feasibility of adding four ``corner`` rods to the K Reactor`s 20-rod HCR system is being investigated. It is necessary to compare the costs and production gains of this method for gaining additional reactivity and heat distribution control with other supplementary control systems. This document presents the results of an investigation of the production gains that could be made by adding four rods to the KE Reactor HCR system.

Constitution, Metallurgy, and Oxidation Resistance of Iron-Chromium- Aluminum Alloys

Description: The constitution of iron-chromium -aluminum alloys was investigated employing high-purity materials. Ternary sections illustrating the results are presented. The limits of the alpha-plus-sigma region are found to extend from 33 to 63 wt.% chromium at 600 C. At 750 C these limits decreasc to 38 and 57 wt.% chromium. Sigma is found in alloys coataining a maximum of about 9 wt.% aluminum at 600 C and 4 wt.% aluminum at 750 C. The limits of the alpha solid-solution region were investigated between … more
