The construction of a high resolution crystal backscattering spectrometer HERMES I

Description: There is a need in the United States for a state-of-the-art, cold-neutron, crystal backscattering spectrometer (CBS) designed to investigate the structure and dynamics of condensed matter systems by the simultaneous utilization of long wavelength elastic diffraction and high-energy-resolution inelastic scattering. Cold neutron spectroscopy with CBS-type instruments has already made many important contributions to the study of atomic and molecular diffusion in biomaterials, polymers, semiconduct… more

Construction of a Sea-Level, Transisthmian Canal Using Nuclear Explosives

Description: Partial abstract: "This report is based: (1) on information developed in earlier high explosive experiments which determined the optimum spacing and burial depth of charges in a row to produce a channel uniformly wide and deep, and (2) on the Sedan and Danny Boy experiments, which provided data on dimensions of nuclear craters in both soil and basalt rock. This information has been combined with the 1947 route surveys of the Panama Canal company, and estimates have been made not only of the num… more

Construction of AC Motor Controllers for NOvA Experiment Upgrades

Description: I have been constructing Alternating Current (AC) motor controllers for manipulation of particle beam detectors. The capability and reliability of these motor controllers are essential to the Laboratory's mission of accurate analysis of the particle beam's position. The device is moved in and out of the beam's path by the motor controller followed by the Neutrinos at the Main Injector Off-Axis {nu}{sub e} Appearance (NOvA) Experiment further down the beam pipe. In total, I built and tested ten … more

Construction of an Extended Nuclidic Mass Table

Description: A parabolic systematics approach was used to construct an extended mass table with very small deviations between the calculated and known masses. The masses were obtained from a formula parabolic in 2 after inclusion of the necessary considerations. For 763 masses, the standard deviation was 0.35 Mev, and the largest deviation was 2 Mev. Construction of an Improved Bayesian Clutter Suppression Model for Gas Detection

Description: This technical report describes a nonlinear Bayesian Regression model that can be used to estimate effuent concentrations from IR hyperspectral data. As the title implies, the model is constructed to account for background clutter more effectively than current estimators. Although the main objective is to account for background clutter, which is the dominant source of variability in IR data, the model could easily be extended to allow for uncertainties in the atmosphere. The term, "clutter," re… more

Construction of an integrated database to support genomic sequence analysis

Description: The central goal of this project is to develop an integrated database to support comparative analysis of genomes including DNA sequence data, protein sequence data, gene expression data and metabolism data. In developing the logic-based system GenoBase, a broader integration of available data was achieved due to assistance from collaborators. Current goals are to easily include new forms of data as they become available and to easily navigate through the ensemble of objects described within the… more

Construction of Bending Magnet Beamline at the APS for Environmental

Description: Design and construction of a bending magnet beamline at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) by the Pacific Northwest Consortium-Collaborative Access Team (PNCCAT). The beamline will be optimized for x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies with a major focus on environmental issues. The beamline will share the experimental facilities under development at the neighboring undulator based insertion device beamline. Construction of Difference Equations Using Lie Groups

Description: The theory of prolongations of the generators of groups of point transformations to the grid point values of dependent variables and grid spacings is developed and applied to the construction of group invariant numerical algorithms. The concepts of invariant difference operators and generalized discrete sources are introduced for the discretization of systems of inhomogeneous differential equations and shown to produce exact difference equations. Invariant numerical flux functions are construct… more

Construction of energy-stable Galerkin reduced order models.

Description: This report aims to unify several approaches for building stable projection-based reduced order models (ROMs). Attention is focused on linear time-invariant (LTI) systems. The model reduction procedure consists of two steps: the computation of a reduced basis, and the projection of the governing partial differential equations (PDEs) onto this reduced basis. Two kinds of reduced bases are considered: the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) basis and the balanced truncation basis. The projectio… more

Experimental details appropriate for each file type are pulled from the file header and stored in a searchable database. The database also stores specific location and self-directory structure for each data file. Queries can be run on the database according to file type, sample type or other experimental parameters. The database was constructed in Microsoft A… more
