Analysis of a coal brokerage for a midwest site. [Green Bay and Kewaunee, Wisconsin]

Description: Coal demand of an area aggregated and served through a single facility in order to achieve the high volumes necessary to justify unit-train service is deemed a coal brokerage. Once such a system is initiated, it is conjectured that coal users too small to individually receive unit-train orders can begin to capture the cost savings associated with large volume shipments. In order to examine the coal-brokerage concept closely, the Green Bay-Kewaunee, Wisconsin region was chosen as the site for an… more

Performance of an active/passive hybrid solar system utilizing vapor transport

Description: Vapor-phase heat-transport systems are being tested in two of the passive test cells at Los Alamos. The systems consist of an active fin-and-tube collector and a condenser inside a water storage tank. The refrigerant, R-11, can be returned to the collector with a pump or with a self-pumping scheme. A computer model was developed to predict the behavior of the system, after which the computer was used to predict the annual performance of these systems in five cities. The report compares the meas… more

Topics in theoretical surface science

Description: The energetics and structures of clean and adsorbate covered surfaces are investigated in this dissertation. First, the formalism, within the Corrected Effective Medium (CEM) method, for calculating the surface energy of a clean surface is derived. The surface energies for many different metals and their low index surfaces are presented. The minimization of the surface energy is then used to predict the multilayer relaxation of the Al(111), (100), Ni(100), (110) and Fe(100) surfaces. Extensions… more

Low plasma edge temperatures for the self-pumped limiter

Description: Transport code calculations have been performed to study the operation of an INTOR-like tokamak plasma from which helium is removed by a self-pumped limiter, which traps helium, but not hydrogen, in its surface layers. To prevent saturation by helium, the surface is renewed by continuous injection of the surface material (vanadium in this study) into the scrape-off layer. The presence of the injected vanadium leads to plasma temperatures well below 50 eV in the scrape-off layer, with supplement… more

Influence of crack depth on the fracture toughness of reactor pressure vessel steel

Description: The Heavy Section Steel Technology Program (HSST) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is investigating the influence of flaw depth on the fracture toughness of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steel. Recently, it has been shown that, in notched beam testing, shallow cracks tend to exhibit an elevated toughness as a result of a loss of constraint at the crack tip. The loss of constraint takes place when interaction occurs between the elastic-plastic crack-tip stress field and the specimen surfa… more

Survey of flash x-ray techniques and applications

Description: Flash x-ray diagnostics of high-speed dynamic tests need to be reliable as the test may be quite expensive and time-consuming. Preparation for a first-time test can involve many partial or preliminary tests to verify adequacy of x-ray energy, x-ray exposure, film/screen combination, film-holder protection, flash x-ray-generator protection, triggering, and timing techniques. Once these preparations have been successfully completed, very informative results are attainable for a variety of tests i… more

Active measurements of defect processes in shock compressed metals and other solids

Description: Solid samples have been routinely recovered for examination after having been subjected to high pressure shock loading. Such investigations have revealed many unique and interesting defect features and are essential if a detailed understanding of shock deformation processes is to be achieved. Nevertheless, examination of samples hours or days after they are compressed for only a few microseconds in a loading whose rise time may be subnanosecond fails to address the relationship between the resi… more

Roles of repetitive sequences

Description: The DNA of higher eukaryotes contains many repetitive sequences. The study of repetitive sequences is important, not only because many have important biological function, but also because they provide information on genome organization, evolution and dynamics. In this paper, I will first discuss some generic effects that repetitive sequences will have upon genome dynamics and evolution. In particular, it will be shown that repetitive sequences foster recombination among, and turnover of, the el… more

Radiation chemistry of synthetic waste

Description: The yield of H{sub 2} from radiolysis of aqueous solutions is substantially reduced by the presence of nitrate and nitrite in the waste solutions. Nitrate is more efficient in scavenging the precursors to H{sub 2} than is nitrite, therefore, the latter should be maintained at higher levels if minimization of radiolytic gas production is required. Nitrate is the major scavenger for e{sub aq}{sup {minus}} and nitrite is the major scavenger for H atoms. At the concentration levels of the waste sol… more

Particle acceleration with TE/sub 011/ cavity

Description: Presently, the maximum effective electric field, E/sub a/, in an accelerating structure is limited by the available peak rf power. If the structure is superconducting, the peak power requirements are reduced by several orders of magnitude but E/sub a/ is limited by electron loading caused by surface electric fields. A right circular cylinder TE/sub 011/ cavity has no surface electric fields and therefore, E/sub a/ is not limited by electron loading but can reach a much higher value which is lim… more
