User's guide to program PF for permanent file archiving and retrieval. [CNDENSE purges specified tape files and consolidates those remaining, for CDC 7600 computer]

Description: Program PF provides a method for a 7600 user to copy his disk files to magnetic tape(s). When at a later time the user wishes to attach a disk file which has been purged, program PF will retrieve the file from an archive tape and catalog it on disk. A disk file called ARCHIVEDIRECTORY, which contains information about each file, is maintained by PF. The program CNDENSE, which purges specified files from user archive tapes and consolidates the remaining ones, is also briefly described. (RWR)

Fabrication and characterization of laser fusion targets

Description: The fabrication steps are examined for a complex glass target which is designated as a Ball-in-Plate or Saturn target. The Ball-in-Plate target consists of a hollow, D-T filled glass sphere mounted in a thin glass plate. The glass plate is coplaner with a diametral plane of the sphere.

Determination and correlation of mass transfer coefficients in a stirred cell. [Molten Salt Breeder Reactor]

Description: In the proposed Molten Salt Breeder Reactor flowsheet, a fraction of the rare earth fission products is removed from the fuel salt in mass transfer cells. To obtain design parameters for this extraction, the effect of cell size, blade diameter, phase volume, and agitation rate on the mass transfer for a high density ratio system (mercury/water) in nondispersing square cross section contactors was determined. Aqueous side mass transfer coefficients were measured by polarography over a wide range… more

Observation of new levels for isotope separation in atomic uranium by multistep ionization

Description: Over 100 new odd parity levels useful for isotope separation of U(I) were observed between 32,660--34,165 cm/sup -1/ using multistep photoionization. A tabulation of typical cross sections and radiative lifetimes for these states is given. The extension of this technique to mapping the spectra of other heavy atoms is discussed. (auth)

Bubble-Chamber Study of Dimuon Production by Neutrinos Using the Phase-2 EMI and a Dichromatic Beam

Description: The authors propose to examine in detail, using the 15-foot bubble chamber and an improved (Phase II) EMI, the characteristics of 'dimuon' events produced by neutrinos. A light neon-hydrogen filling (30% neon atoms) provides adequate target mass, good track measurements, and high detection efficiency for photons and electrons. Thus e-{mu} and e-e dileptons, as well as dimuons, can be observed with good efficiency. They estimate a yield of 100 detected dimuons in a 200 K picture expoture. They a… more

Automobile Collision Data: An Assessment of Needs and Methods of Acquisition

Description: A report on evaluation of the automotive crash recorder program proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). As the assessment progressed, the implications for automobile collision data as a “whole became apparent and the report has been so titled to provide a more accurate indication of its scope.

Absorption of short-pulse electromagnetic energy by a resistively loaded straight wire

Description: Absorption of short-pulse electromagnetic energy by a resistively loaded straight wire is examined. Energy collected by the wire, load energy, peak load currents, and peak load voltages are found for a wide range of parameters, with particular emphasis on nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) phenomena. A series of time-sequenced plots is used to illustrate pulse propagation on wires when loads and wire ends are encountered. (auth)

Models of electron conductivity which lead to ablation stabilization of fluid instabilities in laser-driven implosions

Description: LASNEX calculations with a modified electron conductivity show the existence of a firepolishing stabilization effect. By modifying the thermal conductivity so that K $alpha$ T/sup n//rho/sup m/, one is able to construct a situation in which the electrons deposit their energy in a thin layer at the ablation surface and closely match the zero order solutions assumed earlier. The firepolishing effect appears to require that a significant fraction of the total pressure be due to the ablation proces… more

Optimizing the mirror (fusion--fission) hybrid reactor for plutonium production

Description: An analytic model of the fusion components is used to generate a consistent set of fusion parameters, and component costs as parameters are varied. A model of the blanket, based on neutronic and thermal hydraulics, is then used to analyze the trade-offs of energy production vs plutonium production dictated by blanket type and management. An economic discussion of fuel cost is also given. (MOW)

Evaluation of the use of sludge containing plutonium as a soil conditioner for food crops

Description: An experiment was conducted to assess the potential hazard associated with the use of sludge containing plutonium as a soil conditioner for food crops. Conditions were chosen that would maximize exposure to the $sup 239$Pu in the sludge through resuspension and in plant content and thus approximated the maximum potential hazards due to the inhalation and ingestion pathways. The estimated 50-year radiation doses to the pulmonary region of the lung, bone, and liver based on the results of the inh… more

Continued studies of calorimeter performance at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory

Description: Calibrations of two calorimeters used for tritium and plutonium assays were made. Data from three new standards of about 0.5, 1, and 5 W were added to the results of a previous report and analyzed together. The accuracies of both calorimeters appear to fall within the specified 0.5 percent, although the data now available for the large calorimeter is insufficient to permit a more definite conclusion. An expression of the bias correction for each calorimeter with respect to the sample power cann… more
