A Preliminary Determination of the Age of Some Colorado Plateau Uranium Ores by the Lead-Uranium Method

Description: Report discussing a geological investigation of the age of Colorado Plateau uranium ores using the lead-uranium methods. The objective of the study was to determine whether the uranium deposits in the Shinarump conglomerate are late Triassic and that those in the Morrison formation are late Jurassic, or whether all deposits are late Cretaceous to early Tertiary.

Preliminary Report on 1952 Field Investigations in Wet Mountains, Colorado

Description: From page 3: A metallogenic province containing thorium in veins in pre-Cambrian rocks along the western slope of the Wet Mountains, Colo. found by the Reconnaissance Group of the U. S. Geological Survey during the summer of 1950,was revealed by the discovery during fiscal-years 1951-1952 of seventeen radioactive deposits scattered along a north-northwest linear distance of twenty miles. All the thorium occurrences were found within terrain that has never been geologically mapped. Three of the … more

Preliminary Report on Geologic Investigations in White Canyon, San Juan County, Utah, 1952

Description: From introduction: Field work, begun in the field season of 1951, was continued by the U. S. Geological Survey in the White Canyon area, San Juan County, Utah, from May 1 to October 28, 1952, The objectives of this work were to study the habits and character of uranium deposits in the area, to determine control and guides to ore and suitable areas for physical exploration, and to map and study the ore-bearing and adjacent strata to determine the regional geologic controls and habits of the uran… more

Preliminary Report on Lost Creek Schroeckingerite Area, Sweetwater County, Wyoming

Description: Introduction: This report is a summary of the field work at the Lost Creek schroeckingerite deposit, Sweetwater County, Wyo. from July 1 through November 22, 1952. The objectives of field work at Lost Creek during the report period were to obtain additional data for calculating tonnage and grade and to obtain additional information on the controls and localization of schroeckingerite. In order to accomplish these objectives the Survey continued the exploration by means of trenching, mapped all … more

Preparation and Examination of Beryllium Carbide

Description: From abstract: "The properties of beryllium carbide were studied to determine its suitability as a high-temperature refractory. Various methods of preparing it were tried and a number of the physical and chemical properties of the resulting products were determined."

Preparation, Identification, and Crystal Structure of a Pentavalent Americium Compound, KAmO₂F₂

Description: From abstract: "A compound that is shown to be KAmO₂F₂ is prepared by the addition of a saturated solution of KF to an acid solution of pentavalent americium." The report further discusses the crystal structure, lattice parameters, number of molecules per unit cell, space group, and atomic positions for the compound.

Procedure for Annealing Operation

Description: By heating the normally cool areas of graphite to temperatures of 200°C or higher, it is evident that a substantial portion of the energy stored will be released. The physical dimension change which is associated with the radiation damage of graphite has been noted to partially recover under laboratory conditions when this amount of stored energy is released. This latter phenomenon is of prime interest in this operation. If a dimension recovery is noted on the gross structure, a solution to cer… more

Progress Report of Southeastern Monazite Exploration, 1952

Description: Report about monzanite placers in streams of the western part of the Piedmont in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The objective of the report is to describe local monazite deposits, to determine geologic controls of monazite placers in the southeastern Piedmont, and to evaluate placer potentialities of the area.

Progress Report on Waste Processing Development Project: The Concentration of Waste

Description: "The objective of the Waste Processing Development Project is to investigate the feasibility of concentrating high-level waste streams to their minimum volume and packaging such waste in containers that are primarily safe and transferable...This report describes experimental and pilot plant development work and enlarges upon two schemes: (1) the concentration of dilute waste solutions to 60 or 70 percent solids slurries in a batch slurry evaporator, removal of the residual water from the waste … more

A Radiometric Traverse Along the Alaska Railroad

Description: Abstract: A sample of carnotite, thought to have been found in the Alaska Railroad belt, was assayed at the Fairbanks Assay Office in 1918, but the exact location from which the material had come was never determined. A "uranium" prospect, apparently unrelated to the carnotite occurrence, was recently staked 4 miles south of Healy. A radiometric traverse along the railroad was undertaken in 1950 in an effort to locate any possible deposits of radioactive material in the vicinity of the right-of… more

Reconnaissance Geology of Placer Deposits Containing Radioactive Minerals in the Bear Valley District, Valley County, Idaho

Description: From introduction: The Bear Valley district is situated in southwestern Idaho, in the drainage of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River (see fig. 1). The placer deposits were drilled by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in 1951 and 1952 to determine their content of monazite and "radioactive black minerals" (here referred to loosely as "radioactive blacks"). The purpose of the study outlined here was to provide a geologic background for an understanding of the origin and distribution of the placer minera… more

Savannah River Plant Stack Gas Dispersion and Microclimate Survey

Description: Abstract: "Atmospheric diffusion and microclimate studies at Savannah River are reported. A new simple method was developed enabling operating personnel to establish the downwind concentration and dispersion pattern of materials released from stacks. A statistical study of atmospheric temperature inversions was made because of the influence on atmospheric diffusion. The microclimate of the plant site is compared with Augusta."

A Special Investigation to Develop a General Method for Three-Dimensional Photoelastic Stress Analysis

Description: The method of strain measurement after annealing is reviewed and found to be satisfactory for the materials available in this country. A new general method is described for the photoelastic determination of the principal stresses at any point of a general body subjected to arbitrary load. The method has been applied to a sphere subjected to diametrical compressive loads. The results show possibilities of high accuracy.
