A Computer Program to Optimize Magnets in a Beam Transport System*

Description: A computer program which optimizes the locations and strengths of magnets in a beam transport system has been written for the IBM 704 and 7090 computers Programs have been previously written which trace a ray through a system of magnets and determine its focusing properties When using such a program, one examines the characteristics of the emergent beam and then varies the parameters of the system manually to optimize it In the program which will now be described, the computer itself performs t… more

Effects of Insulin of Hepatic Glucose Metabolism and Glucose Utilization by Tissues

Description: The mechanism whereby insulin lowers the blood glucose concentration is currently under extensive investigation. Despite the general agreement that the addition of insulin increases glucose uptake by various isolated tissues, the question has been raised whether administered insulin produces its blood sugar lowering effect in vivo primarily in increasing glucose uptake. Furthermore, it has been suggested that physiologically-released insulin may not exert the same effects as are produced by adm… more

An Introduction to the Description and Evaluation of Microwave Systems Using Terminal Invariant Parameters

Description: Report presenting the technical background and basis for a new method of evaluating certain performance parameters which are common to all microwave systems. A unique feature of the new measurement concept is its elimination of the precision waveguide and connector requirements for an important class of measurement problems.

Pilot Plant Tests and Design Study of a 2.5 MGD Horizontal-Tube Multiple-Effect Plant

Description: From Summary: "Heat transfer coefficients for 2-, 2.5-, and 3-inch diameter horizontal aluminum-brass tubes are presented and correlated as functions of tube diameter, tube spacing, feed rate, feed salinity, heat flux, boiling point, and vapor velocity. A model of the heat transfer mechanism is proposed to explain and correlate the results."

A Study of Water Plant Isolation From Contamination

Description: From Introduction: "In this study, data has been obtained on radioactive nuclide concentrations in nuclear power plants of both the BWR direct cycle and the PWR indirect cycle. These data, together with leakage rates actually experienced in the PWR steam generators and with assumed leakage rates in brine heaters, are used to calculate concentrations of radioactive nuclides in the water plant product and effluent."

Review of Existing and Potential Test Sites in Areas 18, 19, and 20, Pahute Mesa, Nevada Test Site

Description: Abstract: "Recent request for new sites has prompted an overall review of the Pahute Mesa area. The criteria used in this review are that the geology must be favorable and that horizontal spacing of emplacement holes being developed should be 2.5 to 3 times hole depth. The review shows that current emplacement requirements have exhausted available explored sites and have effectively eliminated 90 percent of the blocks of ground geologically favorable for chambered sites."

Value of Desalted Water for Irrigation

Description: From Introduction: "This report contains the results of a research study on the "Value of Desalted Water for Irrigation" undertaken in January 1967 by the Bureau of Reclamation and the Saline Water, United Sates Department of the Interior. The objectives of the study were: a. To determine, through application of desalting techniques, the costs and benefits associated with the progressive decreases in the salinity of irrigation water supplies. b. Dynamics of Wheeled Vehicles, Report 1: A Mathematical Model for the Traversal of Rigid Obstacles by a Pneumatic Tire, Appendix B: Digital Implementation of Segmented Tire Model

Description: Summary: "This appendix presents the procedures for digital implementation of the segmented tire model, developed in the basic report for an analog computer. Two procedures are required: (a) determination of the segment spring coefficient from measured load-deflection test results, and (b) computation of the resultant force vector transmitted to the axle. Digital programs for both procedures were written in Fortran IV for a GE-420 system, and are included" (p. xi).
