She wears a white bonnet and a shawl, typical of the region of Lorraine. Both women wear blue-white-and-red rosettes on their headwear. A bird flies at the lower left side of the picture. (Alsace-Lorraine was a part of France ceded to the German Empire in 1871. It was reverted to France at the end of the First World War.)
