Numerical simulation of geopressured geothermal reservoirs

Description: This paper discusses the governing equations describing mass and energy transport in geopressured geothermal reservoirs. A fully interacting rock-fluid system with rock porosity, permeability, and thermal conductivity dependent on the fluid and rock stresses is considered. The mathematical model includes the effects of solution and free natural gas. Sample calculations of a hypothetical hydrothermal reservoir are presented to show the applicability of reservoir simulation. (4 figs., 9 refs.)

Oak Ridge EPR reference design

Description: A Tokamak EPR reference design is presented as a basis for further study leading to a conceptual design. The set of basic plasma parameters selected, namely, minor radius of 2.25 m, major radius of 6.75 m, magnetic field on axis of 4.8 T and plasma current of 7.2 MA, should produce a reactor-grade plasma with a significant neutron flux even with the large uncertainty in plasma physics scaling from present experience to large sizes. Neutronics and heat transfer calculations coupled with mechanic… more

Observation of f-f' interference in $pi$$sup -$p $Yields$ K$sup -$K$sup +$n at 6 GeV/c

Description: Preliminary results from a study of $pi$$sup -$p $Yields$ K$sup -$K$sup +$n at 6 GeV/c with the Argonne Effective Mass Spectrometer are presented. The 100,000-event data sample shows a dramatic drop in the Y$sub 4$$sup 0$ moment of the K$sup -$K$sup +$ decay angular distribution at a K$sup -$K$sup +$ mass of 1500 MeV. This feature is interpreted as a result of f-f' interference, which can also explain the excess of D-wave cross section near 1450 MeV observed previously. (auth)

Observer performance in detecting multiple radiographic signals: prediction and analysis using a generalized ROC approach

Description: The theories of decision processes and signal detection provide a framework for the evaluation of observer performance. Some radiologic procedures involve a search for multiple similar lesions, as in gallstone or pneumoconiosis examinations. A model is presented which attempts to predict, from the conventional receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve describing the detectability of a single visual signal in a radiograph, observer performance in an experiment requiring detection of more tha… more

Occupational health physics at a fusion reactor

Description: Future generation of electrical power using controlled thermonuclear reactors will involve both traditional and new concerns for health protection. A review of the problems associated with exposures to tritium and magnetic fields is presented with emphasis on the occupational worker. The radiological aspects of tritium, inventories and loss rates of tritium for fusion reactors, and protection of the occupational worker are discussed. Magnetic fields in which workers may be exposed routinely and… more

On-line reactor surveillance algorithm based on multivariate analysis of noise

Description: A mini-computer based surveillance algorithm for monitoring signals from nuclear power plants to provide advanced warning of anomalous conditions has been developed and implemented for on-line applications. The reactor state is characterized by the analysis of noise signals. During an observation period when normal conditions prevail, the surveillance algorithm utilizes these noise characterizations to form a statistical description of normal reactor behavior. At the conclusion of this observat… more

One more algorithm for generating elastic and inelastic scattering matrices

Description: Much effort in recent years has been spent on attempts to optimize the numerical problem of calculating elastic and inelastic multigroup scattering matrices from basic ENDF/B data. This paper presents an algorithm which minimizes the amount of data manipulation and approximation required. The algorithm is based on avoiding time-consuming transformations between c.m. and lab coordinates for the differential cross section and the additional requirement with the ETOG algorithm to manufacture Legen… more

Operational accidents and radiation exposure experience within the United States Atomic Energy Commission, 1943--1975. [AEC health and safety during first 32 years]

Description: The occupational injury and fatality experience during 32 years of the development of the atomic energy industry under the direction of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and its predecessor, the Manhattan Engineering District, is reviewed. Data are included on the cause of all accidents, including fires and transportation accidents, and the cost of AEC property damage. Fatalities of AEC and contractor personnel from all causes during the 32-year period totaled 321, of which 184 occurred in con… more

Optimization of the ECT background coil

Description: This study was begun to optimize the Eccentric Coil Test (ECT) background coil. In the course of this work a general optimization code was obtained, tested, and applied to the ECT problem. So far this code has proven to be very satisfactory. The results obtained with this code and earlier codes have illustrated the parametric behavior of such a coil system and that the optimum for this type system is broad. This study also shows that a background coil with a winding current density of less than… more

Origins of Circular Dichroism bands in Bowman--Birk soybean trypsin inhibitor

Description: The spectral properties of Bowman-Birk soybean trypsin inhibitor (BBI) were investigated by analyzing difference absorption spectra and difference circular dichroism (CD) spectra and by comparing them with those of tyrosyl model compounds. The O-acetylation of tyrosyl side chains showed that the ultraviolet CD bands of BBI above 225 nm originate from disulfide side chains and tyrosyl phenolic groups. A broad negative CD band centered around 280 nm in BBI arises mainly from disulfide bonds (epsi… more

ORNL PWR Blowdown Heat Transfer Program

Description: The PWR-Blowdown Heat Transfer Program is an experimental, separate effects, study of the relations among the principal variables that can alter the rate of blowdown, the presence of flow reversal and re-reversal, and time delay to critical heat flux, the rate at which dryout progresses, and similar time- related functions that are important to LOCA analysis. Primary test results will be obtained from the Thermal Hydraulic Test Facility (THTF), a large, non-nuclear pressurized-water loop which … more
