Licensing topical report: the measurement and modelling of time-dependent fission product release from failed HTGR fuel particles under accident conditions

Description: The release of fission products from failed fuel particles was measured under simulated accident (core heatup) conditions. A generic model and specific model parameters that describe delayed fission product release from the kernels of failed HTGR fuel particles were developed from the experimental results. The release of fission products was measured from laser-failed BISO ThO/sub 2/ and highly enriched (HEU) TRISO UC/sub 2/ particles that had been irradiated to a range of kernel burnups. The b… more

Light water reactor fuel reprocessing: dissolution studies of voloxidized and nonvoloxidized fuel

Description: Small-scale tests with irradiated Zircaloy-clad fuels from Robinson, Oconee, Saxton, and Point Beach reactors with burnups from about 200 to 28,000 MWD/MTHM have been made to determine the dissolution behavior of both voloxidized (U{sub 3}O{sub 8}) and nonvoloxidized (UO{sub 2}) fuel. No significant technical problems were encountered in batch-dissolving of either form. Dissolution rates were well-controlled in all tests. Significant characteristics of U{sub 3}O{sub 8} dissolution that differed… more

Line-focus solar central power system, phase I. Subsystem experiment: receiver heat transfer

Description: Wind-tunnel tests confirmed that heat losses due to natural convection are negligible in the line-focus, solar-powered receiver. Anomalies in the forced-convection tests prevented definitive conclusions regarding the more important forced convection. Flow-visualization tests using a water table show much lower velocities inside the receiver cavity than outside, supporting the supposition that the forced-heat transfer should be less than that from a standard exposed cylinder. Furthermore, the wa… more

Liquid metal reactions under postulated accident conditions for fission and fusion reactors

Description: Sodium and lithium reactions are considered in the context of a postulated breach of a coolant boundary. Specific topics addressed are coolant-atmosphere and coolant-material reactions which may contribute to the overall consequence of a postulated accident scenario, and coolant reaction extinguishment and effluent control which may be desirable for containment of the spilled coolant.

LOFT Monthly Progress Report for March 1980

Description: During March, evaluation of Test L3-2 continued and preparations began for the next tests, L6-5 and L3-7. Test L6-5 is the first test of the operational transient series and is a loss-of-feedwater incident. Test L3-7 is a small break, similar to L3-2, wherein the emergency coolant flow is adjusted to permit investigation of natural circulation modes. The controlling schedule items involve efforts to add instrumentation to the plant to better characterize system response. Specifically, a new hot… more

Low-energy nuclear fusion data and their relation to magnetic and laser fusion

Description: The accuracy of the basic fusion data for the T(d,n)/sup 4/He, /sup 3/He(d,p)/sup 4/He, T(t,2n)/sup 4/He, D(d,n)/sup 3/He, and D(d,p)T reactions was investigated in the 10- to 100-keV bombarding energy region, and the effects of inaccuracies on the design of fusion reactors were assessed. The data base for these reactions (particularly, the most critical T(d,n)/sup 4/He reaction) rests on 25-year-old experiments the accuracy (often assumed to be +- 5%) of which has rarely been questioned: yet, … more

LSA large area silicon sheet task continuous liquid feed Czochralski growth. Quarterly report, January-March 1980

Description: The purpose of this specific phase of the continuous liquid feed program is the design and development of equipment and processes in order to demonstrate the continuous growth of crystals, by use of the Czochralski method, suitable for producing monocrystalline silicon for use in solar cells. This involves the growth of at least 150 kgs of monocrystalline silicon ingots, 150 mm in diameter, obtained from a single growth container. Our approach to meeting this goal is to develop a furnace with c… more

LSi-11 Microcomputer-Based Data Acquisition System for an Optical Multichannel Analyzer

Description: A microcornputer based operating system for programming and data acquisition from a two a dimensional target optical multichannel analyzer used for high-speed UV/visible spectroscopy is described. The hardware and software interfacing requirements for such a system to provide dedicated real time data acquisition is considered. It is found that a relatively simple parallel interface to an inexpensive microcomputer can be properly configured to perform adequately for high-speed image processing.

Materials Characterization Center workshop on leaching of radioactive waste forms. Summary report

Description: At the first Materials Characterization Center (MCC) workshop, on the leaching of radioactive waste forms, there was general agreement that, after certain revisions, the proposed leach test plan set forth by the MCC can be expected to meet most of the nuclear waste community's waste form durability data requirements. The revisions give a clearer definition of the purposes of each test and the end uses of the data. As a result of the workshop, the format of the test program has been recast to cl… more
