Propellants for Electrical Propulsion Systems : Panel Discussion of Rocket Propellants, American Chemical Society Meeting, Berkeley, August 8

Description: As we might suspect, the propellant problems for electrical propulsion systems are quite different than those of chemical or nuclear propulsion schemes. In those cases, two of the most important parameters were the propellant temperature and mean molecular weight. Here we are sidestepping the temperature requirement entirely by using electrical energy for the energy source rather than chemical or thermal energy. Of course, mission analysis have demonstrated that the energy per unit weight requi… more

Quarterly Progress Report, Period from February 16, 1960 to May 15, 1960

Description: "This report is the second quarterly report under the extension of Contract AT(30-1)-2264 for the coating of UO2 and U spheres with various metals such as Nb, Cr, Mo, Mb-5V, W and Si. A complete discussion of the desirability and advantages of such protective coatings is given in detail in NUMEC-NYO-2801 (1)."

Refinements of the Theory of the Infinitely-Long, Self-Acting, Gas-Lubricated Journal Bearing. Interim Report

Description: The lubrication equations for an arbitrary Newtonian fluid are derived directly from the general equations for conservation of mass, momentum, and energy. From the lubrication equations an inequality is obtained for the internal film temperature rise, after which the isothermal film equations are derived. Then, for perfectly-aligned self-acting journal bearings, a conservation equation is obtained. For gas bearings this condition gives: [formula] constant along the axis of the bearing. Applicat… more

Research and Investigation Leading to Methods of Generating and Detecting Radiation in the 100 to 1000 Micron Wavelength Range of the Spectrum. Quarterly Progress Report No. 15 for 1 September to 1 December 1959

Description: Purpose of this research is twofold:: (1) to uncover new principles or techniques from which a CW source of electromagnetic radiation for the low millimeter and submillimeter wavelength range can be developed; and (2) to develop suitable detectors, components, and measuring techniques for evaluating and using the radiation as a diagnostic tool for plasma physics

Standardization in the Design and Construction of Electronic Instrumentation and Control Systems

Description: Abstract. An extensive activity at the University of California Lawrence Radiation Laboratory is the design and construction of elaborate electronic systems for instrumentation and control of test and research facilities. Design and construction of these large scale electronic systems is guided by principles and practices of standardization which reduce system cost and completion time. A summary of these standardization principles and practices is presented.

Strategic Graphite, A Survey

Description: From abstract: Strategic graphite consists of certain grades of lump and flake graphite for which the United States is largely or entirely dependent on sources abroad. Lump graphite of high purity, necessary in the manufacture of carbon brushes, is imported from Ceylon, where it occurs in vein deposits. Flake graphite, obtained from deposits consisting of graphite disseminated in schists and other metamorphic rocks, is an essential ingredient of crucibles used in the nonferrous metal industries… more

Synthesis of Semi-Conductor Materials by Radiation Included in Reactions

Description: "Progress is reported on: design of a continuous flow system for the irradiation of silane using a Cos5 source; pile irradiation of silane samples at elevated temperatures; investigation of materials other than silane, including nonsilicon compounds as well as those containing the silyl group; modification of the existing vacuum system for handling larger quantities of silane as well as increasing the accuracy of the pressure measurements; and use of an electric discharge for the decomposition … more

Tungsten Resources of Montana: Deposits of the Mount Torrey Batholith, Beaverhead County

Description: Report issued by the Bureau of Mines over the tungsten deposits on Beaverhead County, Montana. As stated in the introduction, "this report presents information obtained from July 1955 to September 1957 on tungsten deposits in and near the Mount Torrey batholith" (p. 1). This report includes tables, maps, illustrations, and photographs.

A Two-Group Calculation of the Transients in an Externally Driven Reactor with Reflector

Description: Summary: "Expressions for the fast and thermal flux in the core of an externally driven, symmetrical infinite slab reactor with a reflector are derived as a function of the reflector thickness. The driver is represented by an inward current of fast neutrons through the outer boundary of the reflector. The flux distribution curve is plotted for several values of reflector thickness. The object is to determine the effect of changing reflector thickness on the flattening of the flux inside of the … more

Classification of PuO2 Particles

Description: The Biology Operation, Hanford Laboratories, required plutonium dioxide particles in five different micron and sub-micron size ranges. These were to be supplied as a water suspension in small containers. It was necessary to design equipment, suitable for hood operation, which would give a satisfactory separation of these particles.

Non-military Uses of Nuclear Explosions

Description: Introduction. With the development of fission and subsequently of thermonuclear explosives, a very large source of cheap energy has become available. The problem of using this energy for peaceful purposes safely and economically presents itself as one of the most interesting and important of our time. In explosions the energy is released very suddenly. Conversion of this sudden release of energy at extremely high temperature and pressure into the form of useful work, either mechanical or chemic… more

Completion Report An Automatic Fuel Element Stamping Machine

Description: This document will be concerned with the design, operation and maintenance of an automatic fuel element stamping machine. In order to take advantage of automatic unloading and length checking at the Acme-Gridley lathes in the 313 Building, automatic stamping of fuel elements is desirable. This, along with the need for a permanent canning line identification, resulted in a request for a machine to automatically stamp HAPO fuel elements on a production basis.

Final Report of Piping Components for Organic Coolants

Description: Organic compounds with high boiling points and low corrosion qualities have been considered for use as reactor coolants and moderators. Those being considered, however, have a greater tendency to leak than does water. A program to evaluate mechanical closures to be used for a leak-tight system for organic fluids has been established. Report HW-59446 covered descriptions of the facility used in this study and the primary results of tests covering two liquids, fittings, and instrumentation. This … more

Once Through Decontamination Studies- Interim Report No. 1.

Description: The decontamination of the present Hanford reactors involves a once-through cleaning operation. Considerable interest has also been shown in determining the feasibility of this once-through technique for cleanup of certain portions of the NPR system. This report contains information on a series of tests performed in the 242-B single pass flow facility. Information concerning the following are presented: (1) Efficiency of decontaminating KER Loop 1 and 2 contaminated specimens. (2) Efficiency of… more

Operation Pre-Gnome: Seismic Data from Natural Phenomena and High-Explosive Tests Near Carlsbad, New Mexico

Description: Formulas derived from earlier work satisfactorily predicted low frequency ground effects resulting from the Pre-Gnome explosions, but they not predict high accelerations associated with high frequency ground waves. The Pre-Gnome experiments taken since indicated that accelerations and ground amplitudes are proportional to the explosive charge, but physical conditions limit extrapolation on this basis to relatively low yields. Predicted accelerations resulting from the 10 kt Gnome explosion in p… more
