The Coulometric Determination of Acetic Acid

Description: Abstract: "Small amounts of acetic acid, equivalent to 400 ul. of 0.3 to 0.13 g/L. can be titrated coulonatrically in the presence of a 10 to 25-fold excess of HN03 in 70%, isopropanol. An accuracy of +/- 0.1% and a precision of +/- 8.5% (99% limite) are obtained.

Initial Experiments on the Brookhaven Reactor. VI. Fast Source Correction for Diffusion Length Measurements on BNL Reactor

Description: In a manner somewhat analogue to that employed by R. Margulies in his memo (BNL Log No. C-2985) on fast source corrections in sigma piles, corrections to be applied to the data obtained on the laid-up graphite in the BNL reactor have been calculated. The correction was computed for a Ra-Be source using the data of Seren and using a standard graphite density for the BNL pile of 1.69. Values of the correction for different experimental sets of data were computed for each of three different diffus… more

The Identification and Determination of Trace Amounts of Rare Earth Elements in Graphite by Neutron Activation

Description: Abstract: "A method is described for the identification and quantitative determination of trace amounts of rare earths in graphite by measurement of the energies and decays of the activities induced by neutron irradiation. The specific rare earth elements identified are europium and samarium. During the development of this method, the half-lives of Eu-152 and Sm-153 were determined. These are reported as 9.32 +/- 0.04 hours and 46.34 +/- 0.23 respectively."

Investigation of Cementitious Materials for Possible Use in Concretes for Pile Shielding

Description: From introduction: "The present report reviews the work conducted on the development of new cements other than magnesium oxychloride during the period from August, 1943, to October 1949. As in the previous reports, the total water contents reported represent the hydrogen combined as water and that which may be combined as a compound other than water."

Lead-Zinc-Silver in the Poughkeepsie District and Part of the Upper Uncompahgre and Mineral Point Districts, Ouray and San Juan Counties, Colorado

Description: Report issued by the Bureau of Mines over mining districts in Colorado. As noted in the introduction, "in this report the physical features, climate, and ore deposits of the districts are described, and a brief history of mining and production of lead, zinc, and silver is given" (p. 4). This report includes tables, illustrations, and maps.

Limits of Inflammability and Ignition Temperatures of Hexone in Air and in Other Gaseous Atmospheres

Description: The following report summarizes the data taken from a series of measurements on the combustion and ignition properties of hexone. The experiments were taken at the Bureau of Mines Central Experiment Station by their personnel, and the samples were given to them by KAPL and Hanford.

Optical Properties of Three Uranium Phosphates

Description: Abstract: "Crystal system, crystal habit, and principal refractive indices, of uranyl hydrogen phosphate tetrahydrate, uranyl ammonium phosphate trihydrate, and uranyl phosphate tetrahydrate are reported. A procedure for differentation of these three compounds using this data was developed."

Progress Report on Carnotite Studies; Carbonate Processes: September 1949

Description: This is a progress report on the carbonate process, compiled by the chemical development department of the Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Corporation's Y-12 plant, covering the month of September, 1949. In the previous month, the problem of immediate interest to the Monticello operation were listed. Projects that were left incomplete during that time were continued during this month, as well as a brief investigation of the process in which raw ore is leached with sodium carbonate, the sands and s… more

Direct Current Electromagnetic Pumps

Description: Abstract: "A number of direct current conduction type electromagnetic pumps for liquid metals were constructed. Pumping capacities of over 400 gpm and efficiencies of over 50 percent were obtained. NaK alloy at temperatures up to 400 C was used in the test. The large currents required were obtained from rectifiers or from a homopolar generator constructed for the purpose."

Fabrication of Uranium Wire

Description: From abstract: "The present report describes experimental work performed to establish a procedure for the production of uranium metal wire. In all cases, the size of the initial rod was 1/2 inch diameter. Three materials were used: hot extruded tuballoy rod, high purity cast tuballoy rod, and cast U-235 rod."
