Iron Oxide Reduction Equilibria: A Critique from the Standpoint of the Phase Rule and Thermodynamics

Description: Report issued by the Bureau of Mines over studies conducted on iron oxide reduction. As stated in the scope of bulletin, "this bulletin, therefore, presents the properties of the common oxides of iron, their combinations with each other, and the reduction-equilibrium diagrams by which the investigator passes from one to the next; the end point is not pure iron but the carburized iron of the blast furnace, cast iron" (p. 1-2). This report includes tables, and illustrations.

Methods, Costs, and Safety in Stripping and Mining Coal, Copper Ore, Iron Ore, Bauxite, and Pebble Phosphate

Description: From Extent of Open-Pit Mining and Purpose of this Publication: "Various methods and machines are employed, and costs are low; in fact, costs have to be low because coal and ores command a low price on the market. These factors, together with queries on methods and costs of stripping and the increase in open-pit mining, have justified investigation by the Bureau of Mines for this form of mining and publication of the results in this report."

Oxides in Pig Iron: Their Origin and Action in the Steel-Making Process

Description: From Introduction: "In summarizing the evidence in the literature it is apparent that there is general agreement among furnace men on the existence of so-called "bad-iron." It is also evident that the existence of dissolved or occluded gases is not an explanation. The presence of suspended oxides has been proved, and at least one plausible explanation for their formation has been given."

Rock Bursts in the Lake Superior Copper Mines, Keweenaw Point, Michigan

Description: From Introduction: "The effect of rock pressure may be general and continuous disintegration and reduction in size of pillars of ore and rock left for the support of the workings, resulting in the collapse of hanging wall and the closing of stopes, drifts, and shafts, or the action may be sudden and violent and aside from seriously affecting the workings may present a real hazard to the operation of mines. The object in the preparation of this report is to add to the accumulated information and… more
