An Analysis of the Full-Floating Journal Bearing

Description: Report discussing an analysis of the operating characteristics of a full-floating journal bearing, a bearing in which a floating sleeve is located between the journal and bearing surfaces, is presented together with charts from which the performance of such bearings may be predicted.

Approximate methods for pile design calculations

Description: From introduction: "At a certain stage in the design of a pile there come a time when it is urgent to obtain day to day answers on the effects of various changes in the design parameters... It is hoped that the procedures described in the present memo will serve as a bridge between the crudest diffusion theory calculations and the more elaborate multi-group methods."

Balanced Ionization Chamber for Differential Measurements of Gamma Rays

Description: "The purpose of the work was to develop a method of measuring very small differences in the half lives of gamma ray emitting radioactive substances. The apparatus was then used to try to detect a difference in the half lives of Be7 metal and BeO. The results of the measurements on the two different chemical forms of beryllium will be given" (p. 1).

Charts for determining the characteristics of sharp-nose airfoils in two-dimensional flow at supersonic speeds

Description: Solutions of the Hugoniot shock equations and Meyer expansion equations are plotted in such a manner as to permit the pressure distribution, the local Mach number, and the angles of shock waves on arbitrary sharp-nose airfoils at supersonic speeds to be obtained directly. (author).

Column and Plate Compressive Strengths of Aircraft Structural Materials: Extruded 0-1HTA Magnesium Alloy

Description: Column and plate compressive strengths of extruded 0-1HTA magnesium alloy were determined both within and beyond the elastic range from tests of flat end H-section columns and from local instability tests of H-, Z-, and channel section columns. These tests are part of an extensive research investigation to provide data on the structural strength of various aircraft materials. The results are presented in the form of curves and charts that are suitable for use in the design and analysis of aircr… more

Compressible Flow Tables for Air

Description: "This paper contains a tabulation of functions of the Mach number which are frequently used in high-speed aerodynamics. The tables extend from M = 0 to M = 10.0 in increments of 0.01 and are based on the assumption that air is a perfect gas having a specific heat ratio of 1.400" (p. 1).

Criticality in graphite systems

Description: From introduction: "The use of graphite in the collectors for the electromagnetic process results in the need for storage and processing of masses of U-235 contaminated carbons. Because of the widely differing moderating properties of carbon hydrogen, it was necessary to employ a modified thermal diffusion method to determine critical conditions, applicable to the Y-12 chemical cycle. It can be shown that the following treatment is basically the same as that used by X-10 in one-group pile calcu… more

Determination of elastic stresses in gas-turbine disks

Description: A method is presented for the calculation of elastic stresses in symmetrical disks typical of those of a high-temperature gas turbine. The method is essentially a finite-difference solution of the equilibrium and compatibility equations for elastic stresses in a symmetrical disk. Account can be taken of point-to-point variations in disk thickness, in temperature, in elastic modulus, in coefficient of thermal expansion, in material density, and in Poisson's ratio. No numerical integration or tri… more

Effect of brake forming in various tempers on the strength of Alclad 75S-T aluminum-alloy sheet

Description: Results are presented of tests to determine the effect of brake forming in various tempers on the strength of Alclad 75S-T aluminum alloy sheet in the direction parallel to the brake. The tensile and compressive strengths of Alclad 75S-T sheet, formed in the O and W tempers, were either increased or little affected compared with those of similarly treated unformed material. When Alclad 75S-T sheet 'as received' was formed, however, the tensile yield stress was reduced about 7 percent for the wi… more
