Response of a Low-Geometry Scintillation Counter to Fission and Other Products

Description: Abstract: The theoretical response of a low-geometry scintillation counter to any photon-emitting nuclide whose decay scheme is known is developed. It is used to compute the counting rate, as a function of time, of (1) individual and total fission products resulting from. 10^4 simultaneous slow-neutron fissions of U^235 and (2) several other nuclides for 10 initial atoms. The calculations extend from ~45 min to 301 days after fission.

Quarterly Progress Report (April 1 to June 30, 1950)

Description: This is the second of a series of Quarterly Progress Reports. While most of the departments have summarized their work or used a form comparable to abstracts, the Chemistry Department has given both abstracts and complete reports on its work. The major part of the progress in the Reactor Science and Engineering Department is being presented simultaneously in a separate classified report. There are reports from the following departments: (1) physics department; (2) instrumentation and health phy… more

Quarterly Progress Report (January 1 to March 31, 1950)

Description: This is the first of a series of Quarterly Reports. These reports will deal primarily with the progress made in our scientific program during a three months period. Those interested in matters pertaining to organization, administration, complete scientific program, personnel and other matters not directly involved in current scientific progress are referred to our Annual Progress Report which is issued in January. We have attempted to describe new information that appears significant, or of int… more

Reconnaissance for Uranium in the Southern Carrizo Mountains, Apache County, Arizona

Description: Purpose: A reconnaissance was conducted during parts of August and September, 1956, of an area about two miles square in the southern Carrizo Mountains where the Permian Cutler formation, including its DeChelly member, and the Triassic Shinarump member of the Chinle formation, are exposed. The purpose was to appraise the uranium potential of the area and to determine the cause of bleaching in the DeChelly. Extensive uranium mineralization in the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation around… more

Periodic Heat Flow in a Stratified Medium with Application to Permafrost Problems

Description: From abstract: Solutions to the Fourier heat equation for quasi-steady periodic flow in a stratified semi-infinite medium can be obtained readily by standard methods. The results have wide application to studies of earth-temperature variations induced by diurnal, annual, and other periodic variations in ground-surface temperature. Much of the previous work on this subject has been interpreted with reference to the solution for the homogeneous case; and this can be seriously in error when applie… more

Internally Cooled Molten-Salt Reactors

Description: The initial and long-term nuclear characteristics of two internally cooled heterogeneous, graphite-moderated, two-region, molten-salt reactors have been studied. These reactors have doubling times of 22.5 years and 27.5 years. Methods of decreasing the doubling times by removing the Pa233 from the core and be increasing the specific power of the reactor are described.

Internally Cooled Molten-Salt Reactors

Description: The initial and long-term nuclear characteristics of two internally cooled heteroingeneous graphite-moderated two-region molten-salt reactors were studied. The reactors have doubling times of 22.5 and 27.5 years. Methods of decreasing the doubling times by removing the Pa/sup 233/ from the core and by increasing the specific power of the reactor are described. (auth)

Dynamic Corrosion in an Iron - Stainless Steel Toroid by Sodium at 900 Degrees F

Description: Memorandum presenting a corrosion investigation conducted with molten sodium flowing at a velocity of 25 feet per second in a toroid of AISI type 347 stainless steel with an insert consisting of seven Globeiron tubes in parallel at the hot zone. A 500-hour test was run at a nominal outer wall temperature of 500 degrees Fahrenheit with a temperature difference between the hot and cold sections of 40 degrees.

Effects of variations in combustion-chamber configuration on ignition delay in a 50-pound-thrust rocket

Description: Ignition delays of a diallylaniline-triethylamine mixture and of triethyl trithioposphite with red fuming nitric acid were measured as a function of combustor dimensions, initial propellant temperature, and initial ambient pressure. Ignition delay increased with exhaust-nozzle diameter. Ignition delay also increased as propellant temperature decreased, but did not vary with initial ambient pressure except with the largest nozzle diameter. A correlation among ignition delay, combustor dimensions… more

Ignition delay experiments with small-scale rocket engine at simulated altitude conditions using various fuels with nitric acid oxidants

Description: "Ignition delay determinations of several fuels with nitric oxidants were made at simulated altitude conditions utilizing a small-scale rocket engine of approximately 50 pounds thrust. Included in the fuels were aniline, hydrazine hydrate, furfuryl alcohol, furfuryl mercaptan, turpentine, and mixtures of triethylamine with mixed xylidines and diallyaniline. Red fuming, white fuming, and anhydrous nitric acids were used with and without additives. A diallylaniline - triethylamine mixture and a r… more

Orthotoluidine and triethylamine in rocket engine applications

Description: Report presenting a review of the literature pertaining to the use of orthotoluidine and triethylamine in rocket propellant combinations and a summary with particular emphasis on ignition delay investigations and fuel mixture applications. The survey indicated that orthotoluidine is about as good a rocket fuel as aniline with respect to cost, performance, and ignition characteristics, but it has a wider temperature application because of its lower freezing point.

Organophosphorus compounds in rocket-engine applications

Description: Report presenting experimental ignition-delay determinations of mixed alkyl thiophosphites, triethyl trithiophsphite, and propylene N,N-dimethylamidophosphite with red and white fuming nitric acid conducted at a range of temperatures and pressure altitudes. The literature pertaining to the use of organo-phosphorous compounds in rocket-propellant combinations was surveyed and summarized with emphasis on ignition-delay investigations.

Comparison of ignition delays of several propellant combinations obtained with modified open-cup and small-scale rocket engine apparatus

Description: From Summary: "Ignition delays of several propellant combinations obtained with a modified open-cup apparatus and with a small-scale rocket engine of approximately 50-pounds thrust were compared to study any correlations that might exist between the two methods of ignition-delay determination. The results were used in determining the relative utility of each apparatus."
