Energy storage and power conditioning system for the Shiva laser

Description: An optimal energy delivery system for the world's largest glass laser system has been designed based on computer modeling and operation of laser hardware. Components of the system have been tested on operating lasers at LLL. The Shiva system is now under construction and will be completed in 1977. The energy supply described here will provide cost-effective, reliable power and facilitate the gathering of data in pursuit of controlled thermonuclear reactions. (auth)

Parametric lower-hybrid instability driven by modulated electron beam injection

Description: A modulated electron beam is injected into a low ..beta.. plasma parallel to the confining field to investigate the energy-transfer-rate from the electron beam to the plasma. Parametric excitation of electrostatic lower-hybrid waves and ion cyclotron quasimodes is experimentally identified. The temperature of both ions and electrons is observed to increase significantly concomitant with the growth of the instability.

Alpha pulse height analysis of 32 samples simultaneously using a minicomputer

Description: From 19th annual analytical chemistry conference; Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA (3 Sep 1973). An alpha spectroscopy system for analysis of environmental samples at Rocky Flats is described. The system consists of 16 silicon detectors and associated electronics (preamplifiers, amplifiers, multiplier/router, analog- to-digital convcrter, pulseheight analyzer) for input in a NOVA 1200 minicomputer with 24 K, 16 bit memory. Software is briefly discussed. (WHK)

Development of a portable radon detection system. [For monitoring radon-222 in soil gas and ground water for uranium prospecting]

Description: The presence of radon-222 in soil gas and ground water can indicate the existence of nearby uranium deposits even when heavy overburdens completely absorb the associated gamma radiation. Techniques to detect and measure radon have evolved during the past several years to the point where radon prospecting is routinely employed in a number of countries. A program to develop and field test a prototype system for measuring radon from soil gas and water is described. A prototype system employing a f… more

Conceptual design for a fast reactor safety test facility. Preliminary report

Description: In May 1975 Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory issued a preliminary report on a study of Fast Reactor Safety Test Facilities. The study addressed itself to three closely related tasks. (1) A review of the current understanding of fast reactor safety with the aim of identifying important areas of uncertainty which cannot be adequately resolved using analysis, out of pile and/or existing in-pile facilities. (2) Conceptual design studies of one or more new in-pile facilities having characteristics i… more

Evaluation of the autoregression time-series model for analysis of a noisy signal

Description: The autoregression (AR) time-series model of a continuous noisy signal was statistically evaluated to determine quantitatively the uncertainties of the model order, the model parameters, and the model's power spectral density (PSD). The result of such a statistical evaluation enables an experimenter to decide whether an AR model can adequately represent a continuous noisy signal and be consistent with the signal's frequency spectrum, and whether it can be used for on-line monitoring. Although e… more

Development and demonstration of compound parabolic concentrators for solar thermal power generation and heating and cooling applications. Progress report, July--December 1975

Description: Work on the development of Compound Parabolic Concentrators (CPC) is described. A tenfold concentrator with a cavity receiver was constructed and tested. The optical efficiency was very good (65 percent), but the thermal performance was degraded by heat losses of the cavity receiver. A 20 ft/sup 2/ (1.86 m/sup 2/) concentrating collector (5.3x) has been tested for thermal and optical performance, and the optical efficiency was excellent (68 percent). In this collector, aluminum extrusions were … more

Development of lightweight compound parabolic concentrators for solar thermal electric and process heat applications

Description: The design and construction of a lightweight collector panel that uses the Compound Parabolic Concentrator (CPC) to achieve maximal concentration with minimal tracking requirements is described. The primary goal of the effort has been the development of methods of constructing the units with low cost materials that still allow high temperature (120 to 230/sup 0/C) operation. The use of thermoformed plastics for both the container box and the reflector substrate has been investigated for use in … more

Longitudinal feedback system for PEP

Description: Whether the wide bandwidth longitudinal feedback system described in this paper is made to act on the individual modes in frequency domain or on the individual bunches in time domain, it represents a clean and efficient way of damping the longitudinal oscillations without influencing other beam parameters such as bunch shape or synchrotron frequency distribution. The frequency domain feedback presents the advantage of providing information on which modes are unstable and on their risetimes, whi… more

Atomic absorption spectrometer readout and data reduction using the LSI-11 microcomputer

Description: Some common instruments found in the chemistry laboratory have analog chart recorder output as their primary data readout media. Data reduction from this medium is slow and relatively inaccurate. This paper describes how to interface a single LSI-11 microcomputer to PERKIN-ELMER models 603 and 303 Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers.
