A simplified chart for determining Mach number and true airspeed from airspeed-indicator readings

Description: "The determination of flight Mach number from measurements of indicated airspeed and pressure altitude is shown to be relatively simple and leads to direct and accurate computation of true airspeed. A simplified chart is presented for determining flight Mach number and true airspeed for a range of values of indicated airspeed, pressure altitude, and air temperature. A table of standard atmospheric values is included" (p. 1).

Flight Investigation of NACA D(Sub S) Cowlings on the XP-42 Airplane 1: High-Inlet-Velocity Cowling with Propeller Cuffs Tested in High-Speed Level Flight

Description: Report presenting results from a series of flight tests of the maximum speed and cooling characteristics in full-throttle level flight of the XP-42 airplane equipped with a short-nose high-inlet velocity cowling. The results of the tests indicated a maximum speed of 336 miles per hour at 960 horsepower at 25,000 feet. Results regarding maximum speed and pressure and temperatures are provided.

Description: Abstract: The Portage Pass area is in south-central Alaska, and includes part of the narrow neck of land that joins the Kenai Peninsula with the mainland to the north. The Effect of Spinner-Body Gap on the Pressures Available for Cooling in the NACA E-Type Cowling

Description: "Tests of a 1/3-scale model of an NACA E-type cowling were made in the 8-foot high-speed tunnel for the purpose of determining the effect of the gap between the skirt of the hollow spinner and the cowling proper on the pressures available for cooling. It was found that even a large gap (0.096 in. on the model) had no appreciable effect on the available cooling pressures" (p. 1).

Tank tests of a 1/8-size dynamic model of the PB2Y-3 airplane with increased power: NACA model 131

Description: Report presenting a study of the installation of 1800-horsepower engines in the PB2Y-3 airplane in place of the current 1200-horsepower engines. Stability and spray tests were made to determine the performance of the model on the water when tested at both the present and projected conditions of gross load and engine power. Results regarding aerodynamic tests and hydrodynamic tests are provided.

Effect of Length-Beam Ration on Resistance and Spray of Three Models of Flying-Boat Hulls

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the effect of changes in the length-beam ratio of flying-boat hulls on resistance and spray. A family of three models of hulls of different length-beam ratios was used and, in order to maintain comparable hull sizes, the plan-form areas of the hulls were made approximately equal by keeping equal products of length and beam. Results regarding resistance, spray, and take-off performance are provided.

Hydrodynamic-stability tests of a model of a flying boat and of a planing surface having a small downward projection (hook) on the planing bottom near the step

Description: Report presenting stability testing of two dynamic models in tank no. 1 in order to investigate the effects of adding a small projection, or hook, on the planing bottom of the forebody near the step of a seaplane. Tests with two different projections had a rather large effect on all of the trim limits and the landing stability.

Methods and Charts for Computing Stability Derivatives of a V-Bottom Planing Surface

Description: Report presenting methods and charts for computing stability derivatives of a longitudinally straight V-bottom planing surface representing the forebody of a seaplane float or a flying-boat hull without chine flare. The charts for computing hydrodynamic derivatives were used in calculating the trim limit of stability for angles of dead rise of 10, 20, and 30 degrees.

Preliminary Tests to Determine the Dynamic Stability Characteristics of Various Hydrofoil Systems for Seaplanes and Surface Boats

Description: Report discusses the results of testing on the dynamic stability characteristics of various hydrofoil systems for seaplanes, including a flat-hydrofoil tandem system, a 20 degree V-hydrofoil tandem system, a curved-hydrofoil tandem system, a flat-hydrofoil ladder system, a Guidoni S.V.A.-type hydrofoil on a streamline spindle, and several self-propelled models, including the Tietjens hydrofoil system. The instability and spray were compared for the different systems.

Description: Report presenting porpoising tests of three rudimentary models composed of two V-bottom planing surfaces in tandem and fitted with a tail plane. The upper and lower branches of the upper trim limit of stability were determined for three angles of dead rise and two depths of step.

The Use of a Retractable Planing Flap Instead of a Fixed Step on a Seaplane

A type of flap that could be used is described and tested for hydrodynamic stability. Full-Scale Tunnel Tests of a Flying Model of the Curtiss XP-55 Airplane

Description: Report presenting testing in the full-scale tunnel to provide data for estimating the longitudinal stability and control characteristics of the Curtis XP-55 airplane. Testing included lift, drag, pitching-moment, hinge-moment, and elevator pressure measurements for various combinations of angle of attack, elevator deflection, and elevator tab settings. The results of the force tests and some correlation of the results of the force tests and the pressure measurements are presented in the report.

Wind-Tunnel Tests of a Piston-Type Control Booster on an Airfoil and Aileron Model

Description: "Measurements of control moments were made in the NACA stability tunnel to determine the operational characteristics of a piston-type control booster on an aileron. The booster was so constructed and installed that pressures picked up from the air stream below the wing acted on a pair of pistons. The data are presented in the form of curves of pressure coefficients acting on the pistons, hinge-moment coefficients, and booster coefficients plotted against aileron deflection" (p. 1).

Description: Measurements of the spectrum of the fission neutrons of 25 are described, in which the energy of the neutrons is determined from the ionization produced by individual hydrogen recoils. An investigation of aircraft heaters 10: measured and predicted performance of a fluted-type exhaust gas and air heat exchanger

Description: Report presenting performance data on a small exhaust gas and air heat exchanger. The heat transfer rates were measured using about 8000 pounds per hour of exhaust gas and 4300 pounds per hour of ventilating air. The thermal performance of heater no. 2 can be estimated to 3 to 17 percent by use of the method described in the report.

An investigation of aircraft heaters 12: performance of a formed-plate crossflow exhaust gas and air heat exchanger

Description: Report presenting performance data on a Trane exhaust gas and air heat exchanger. Heat transfer rates were measured using specified exhaust gas rates and ventilating-air rates. The measured thermal outputs and static pressure drops are compared with predicted magnitudes.
