Summary of Corrosion Investigations on High-Temperature Aluminum Alloys. Period Covered : February 1955-October 1956

Description: Tests were performed on aluminum alloys to evaluate their behavior in high-temperature, high-pressure. watercooled and -moderated nuclear reactor enviromnents. Test equipment, sample preparation. and test procedures are discussed. Aluminum nickel alloys were found resistant to disintegration for periods up to 60 days in dynamic water at 600 ction prod- F. The corrosion rates of the aluminum alloys M-388 and X-2219 at 600 ction prod- F were found to be too high to merit consideration for claddin… more

BOILING WATER REACTOR TECHNOLOGY STATUS OF THE ART REPORT. VOLUME II. WATER CHEMISTRY AND CORROSION

Description: Information concerning the corrosive effects of water in power reactor moderator-coolant systems is presented. The information is based on investigations reported in the unclassified literature believed to be fairly complete to 1959, but less complete since then. The material is presented in sections on water decomposition, water chemistry, materials corrosion, corrosion product deposits, and radioactivity. It is noted that the report is presented as a part of a continuing program in developmen… more

WATER CHEMISTRY AND FUEL ELEMENT SCALE IN EBWR

Description: The first two sections summarize investigations in EBWR concenced with some aspects of water chemistry. The results of many of these investigations have not been previously published in a form given wide distribution. Included are studies of water conditions, corrosion products (composition, activities, transportation, deposition, and distribution), water dissociation, water activity, fission-product release, and build-up of plant activity. The last two sections of the report give the results o… more

Mixtures of Metals With Molten Salts

Description: A review is presented of various types of solutions of metals in molten salts, especially in their own molten halides. With relatively little reference to the older literature, the progress made in the last 20 years is discussed. Roughly, the solutions are classified into two groups: The metal may retain, to some degree, its metallic properties in the solution, or it may lose them through strong interaction with the salt solvent. The alkali-metal systems are typical examples of the former type,… more

Bibliography of Rover Fuel Processing and Molten Salt Fluoride Volatility Process Development Studies at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Description: A complete bibliography was assembled of Rover fuel processing and molten salt fluoride volatility processing research at, or sponsored by, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The bibliography contains open literature references, topical reports, status and progress reports, and technical memoranda. (auth)

PILOT PLANT SHUTDOWN AND Pu-Al PROCESSING

Description: The large aqueous pilot plant facilities at ORNL were cleaned and are being put in standby condition. Experience was gained during the year as anion exchange was used to recover more than one kg of plutonium left in the exploded evaporator system. This experience is being applied to a new recovery program just beginning in cell 1 of Building 4507. (auth)

Protection Against Fallout Radiation in a Simple Structure

Description: A reinforced Butler building was exposed to fallout from Shots Diablo and Shasta, and the resulting dose rates and fallout deposition inside and outside the structure were measured with various instruments and techniques. Protection factors and roof and ground contributions to the total dose rates at points within the structure were determined from the measurements. Comparisons were made with the results of theoretical and other experimental studies. Information obtained from this experiment sh… more

Protection Against Fallout Radiation in a Simple Structure

Description: A reinforced Rutler building was exposed to fallout from Shots Diablo and Shasta, and the resulting dose rates and fallout deposition inside and outside the structure were measured with various instruments and techniques. Protection factors and roof and ground contributions to the total dose rates at points within the structure were determined from the measurements. Comparisons were made with the results of theoretical and other experimental studies. Information obtained from this experiment sh… more
