Theoretical study of the lateral frequency response to gusts of a fighter airplane, both with controls fixed and with several types of autopilots

Description: Report presenting a theoretical approach to determine the lateral frequency response of a fighter airplane to side gusts and rolling gusts at a Mach number of 0.7 and an altitude of 30,000 feet. Frequency response and power spectral density were determined with the controls fixed and in combination with three different basic types of attitude autopilots.

Flying qualities of a high-performance personal-owner airplane

Description: Report presenting an investigation to measure the flying qualities of a high-performance personal-owner airplane to investigate the possible causes of instrument flying accidents with that type of aircraft. Testing indicated that the lack of aerodynamic stall warning and rapid roll-off at the stall could contribute to stall-spin accidents with high-performance personal-owner aircraft. Results regarding the handling qualities and the control under instrument flying conditions are provided.

Tests of a centering spring used as an artificial feel device on the elevator of a fighter airplane

Description: Report presenting tests to investigate the use of a simple centering spring, which had no variation of force gradient with impact pressure, as an artificial feel device for the elevator control of a fighter airplane. Testing was conducted using a Chance Vought F4U-4B airplane equipped with power controls. Results regarding the force experienced and effects of the feel system are provided.

Uranium Occurrences in the Golden Gate Canyon and Ralston Creek Areas, Jefferson County, Colorado

Description: From abstract: Pitchblende, associated with base-metal sulfides, has been found at eight localities in the northern part of Jefferson County, Colo., in shear zones that cut pre-Cambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks, chiefly hornblende gneiss, biotite schist, and granite pegmatite. The pitchblende deposits, with one exception, are in major shear zones that contain vein-like bodies of carbonate-rich breccia. The breccia bodies range from 1 to 5 feet in thickness and are related probably to the L… more

A Solution of the Distributional Error Problem in Cytophotometry

Description: Use of that portion of the characteristic curve of photographic film in which transmission is linear with log exposure eliminates the distributional error and thus makes possible the assessment of total mass of an inhomogeneously distributed cell consistent without scanning or measuring the cell's projected area. Measurement consists of obtaining the difference in output of a photocell receiving the total light transmitted by a photomicrograph of the cell, and a photomicrograph of the microscop… more

Temperature-Induced Stresses in Solids of Elementary Shape

Description: Report discussing how solids subjected to non-uniform temperature change develop internal stresses determined by, (1) the temperature distribution within the solid, and (2) certain physical constants of the material. For two varieties of heating, the equations determining stress have been put in convenient form for practical use, and tables of certain temperature functions show how to determine stresses in a slab, in a cylinder, or in a sphere subjected to either of two modes of heating. The te… more

Determination of Shapes of Boattail Bodies of Revolution for Minimum Wave Drag

Description: "By use of an approximate equation for the wave drag of slender bodies of revolution in a supersonic flow field, the optimum shapes of certain boattail bodies are determined for minimum wave drag. The properties of three specific families of bodies are determined, the first family consisting of bodies having a given length and base area and a contour passing through a prescribed point between the nose and base, the second family having fixed length, base area, and maximum area, and the third fa… more

Reactions of Preoxidized Beryllium Powder in Moist Carbon Dioxide

Description: Breakaway corrosion of Be in moist CO2 can be avoided if the Be is fabricated using preoxidized powder. The powder is preoxidized by heating in dry O/sub 2/. Preoxidation of Be powder was measured as a function of temperature and time of heating in O/sub 2/. The subsequent reactions of the preoxidized powder in moist CO/sub 2/ at 700 deg C were studied and the effect of increasing amounts of added oxide was measured. A model is proposed to explain the inhibition of corrosion by added oxide. (au… more

Evaluation of Experiment Off-gas System for the EGCR-LITR Capsule Experiment

Description: A proposed modification to the experiment off-gas system for the EGCR-LITR Capsule Experiment is evaluated by comparing the atmospheric radiation doses to laboratory personnel that could result in the event of an experiment failure while utilizing the present off-gas system to those doses that would result if various modifications to the existing system were effected. The modifications considered include the addition of an iodine vapor adsorber and a krypton-xenon adsorber. The addition of an i… more

Removal of Radioiodine from Air-Steam Mixtures

Description: A short-term study was made to investigate the removal of radioiodine vapor from air-steam mixtures as could occur immediately following a nuclear incident in a pressurized water reactor. Activated charcoal traps, designed to simulate a small section of a commercial charcoal canister, were tested at gas velocities of 23.9 to 74.9 ft/min over the temperature range of 75 to 118°C. The iodine removal efficiency was found to range from 99.80 to 99.4% with an average of 99.9%. One test performed at … more

Recovery of Uranium From Fiberglass Air Filters

Description: Abstract: Various procedures for extracting uranium from fiberglass air filters have been tested and compared. Satisfactory results which involve the least amount of handling are obtained by simply washing the material with hot 1:1 hydrochloric acid.

Separation of Tuballoy From Tantalum by Chlorination Distillation Process

Description: Abstract: Tuballoy can be effectively separated from tantalum filaments by chlorination of the filaments and subsequent distillation and condensation of tantalum chloride. Apparatus for chlorination of filaments and distillation separation in one unit is under consideration. Chemical methods of separation of tuballoy from distillation residues are being tested.
