Geology of Part of the Nelchina River Gabbronorite and Associated Rocks, South-Central Alaska
The following report analyzes the geological features of a 6-km by 0.3-km strip of glacially polished rocks of the Nelchina River Gabbronorite located in the eastern part of the Anchorage quadrangle.
Geochemical Survey of the Craig Study Area--Craig and Dixon Entrance Quadrangles and the Western Edges of the Ketchikan and Prince Rupert Quadrangles, Southeast Alaska
The following report documents results taken from a reconnaissance geochemical survey that was conducted in the northwest-trending Alexander terrane, Gravina-Nutzotin overlap assemblage, and Taku terrane in southeast Alaska in the Craig and Dixon Entrance quadrangles and the western edges of the Ketchikan and Prince Rupert quadrangles.
Report and Analysis of Test Data From 1998 Trawl Positioning Gear Trails in the Puget Sound Dabob Bay, Washington
A report about a test which can determine which USBL system performs best in conditions that approximate those in Bristol Bay, Alaska. In the future, the Alaska Fisheries Science Center will need to track bottom fishing trawls in order to assess their impact upon the sea floor biology in Alaska.
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is an area rich in fauna, flora, and oil potential, where development has been debated for over 36 years. Current law forbids oil and gas leasing. This report discusses debate over whether or not to open the ANWR up for development and includes discussion of various legislative options under consideration.
Geochemical Survey of the Valdez 1° x 3° Quadrangle, South-Central Alaska
The following report follows a geochemical survey and its findings in the Valdez quadrangle in south-central Alaska.
Wilderness: Overview and Statistics
The U.S. Forest Service established the first protected "wilderness area" under its own discretion in 1924. In 1964, the Wilderness Act established the National Wilderness Preservation System, reserved to Congress the authority to designate wilderness areas, and directed the Secretaries of Agriculture and of the Interior to review certain lands for their wilderness potential. The Act also designated 54 wilderness areas with 9 million acres of Forest Service land. Congress began expanding the Wilderness System in 1968, and today, there are 631 wilderness areas, totalling nearly 104 million acres, in 44 States.
Petrologic Characterization of Pelitic Schists in the Western Metamorphic Belt, Coast Plutonic-Metamorphic Complex, Near Juneau, Southeastern Alaska
A report about metamorphic rocks exposed near Juneau, Alaska. The belt they are in had a complex history of deformation, metamorphism, and plutonism.
Thermal Evolution of Sedimentary Basins in Alaska
This report covers the study of thermal maturity of sedimentary basins in Alaska taken place in the early 1990s.
The 1992 Eruptions of Crater Peak Vent Mount Spurr Volcano, Alaska
A report which provides an overview of eruptions from Mount Spurr and the Alaska Volcano Observatory's response to them.
Late Cenozoic Benthic Foraminifers of the HLA Borehole Series, Beaufort Sea Shelf, Alaska
A report about benthic foraminiferal faunas in 18 borholes from the eastern Beaufort Sea shelf.
Real-Time Monitoring of Field Measurements for Mine Design: Greens Creek Mine, Admiralty Island, Alaska
Abstract: Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted field investigations at the Greens Creek Mine in southeast Alaska for the purpose of validating computer design of mining methods and assessing real-time monitoring capabilities. The field study required the application of new technology because of the remoteness of the study site, the need for timely acquisition of data, and a limited budget for instruments and data acquisition. Various sensors were installed to monitor rock mass deformation and strain, temperature, SO gas emissions, and blasting. Data were collected through a distributed personal computer network and high-speed modems. These readings were used to develop visualization models of underground metal mining operations and drift-and-fill mining and real-time graphics displays of ground conditions. Results of the field tests showed that it is possible to gather, process, visualize, and verify mine designs on a real-time basis.
Birds of the Kilbuck and Ahklun Mountain Region, Alaska
Summary of the birds of the Kilbuck and Ahklun Mountain region, including geographical distribution, population status, migration habits, nesting habitat, and zoogeography.
Structure and Emplacement of the Magmatic Intrusions Beneath the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes
The goal of this project was to provide constraints on the subsurface geometry of the vent, feeder conduit(s), and possible intrusive bodies in the Novarupta Basin, Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes (VTTS), Katmai National Park, Alaska. This research was designed to support the Katmai Drilling Project, a consortium involving the DOE, NSF, other government agencies, and several universities. Our work aimed at providing information to help guide site selection and identify targets for the drilling program. However, our research also has contributed to the understanding of silicic volcanic systems in general. Understanding the subsurface geometry of the vent is essential for accurately modeling the present thermal regime in the vent region and the eruption dynamics. Determining the origin of surficial fractures indicated the effect of compaction and consolidation of tephra and orientation of the depositional surface on fracture formation. Our research plan included (1) completion of a detailed topographic-structural map of surface fractures including spatial distribution and relative displacements; (2) numerical modeling studies that related surface fractures to major subsurface structures; and (3) interpretation of the origin of surface fractures in light of these model studies.
