CARBON-13 NMR STUDIES OF LIQUID CRYSTALS

Description: High resolution, proton decoupled {sup 13}C nmr are observed for a series of neat nematic liquid crystals, the p-alkoxyazoxybenzenes, and a smectic-A liquid crystal, diethylazoxydibenzoate in a magnetic field of 23 kG. The (uniaxial) order parameters S = <P{sub 2}(cos{theta})> are found to be about 0.4 and 0.9 for the nematic and smectic-A phase respectively at the clearing points. The order parameter increases with decreasing temperature in the nematic phase but is constant, or nearly so… more

CONTAMINATION OF GROUNDWATER BY ORGANIC POLLUTANTS LEACHED FROM IN-SITU SPENT SHALE

Description: The potential for contamination of groundwater by organic pollutants leached from in-situ spent shale was studied in a series of laboratory leaching experiments. Both batch-mode and continuous-flow column experiments were conducted to study the leaching phenomenon. Experimental variables included retorting characteristics of spent shale, leaching time, initial quality of leach water, temperature of leach water, and particle size of spent shale. Several unique samples of spent shale were examine… more

Thermodynamic and kinetic studies of some Group III and Group V elements and alloys by solid state electrochemical techniques

Description: The Gibbs free energy of forming gallium sesquioxide and indium sesquioxide are measured using a CO$sub 2$--CO--O$sub 2$ gas reference electrode and calcia stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte. The free energies are: $delta$G$sup 0$/sub f/($beta$-Ga$sub 2$O$sub 3$(c)) equals -(265,309 +- 152) + (82.47 +- 0.16) (T/K) cal mol$sup -1$ and $delta$G$sup 0$/sub f/(In$sub 2$O$sub 3$ (c)) equals -(223,160 +- 137) + (79.47 +- 0.12) (T/K) cal mol$sup -$.$sup 1$ A solid state galvanic cell is empl… more

Thermodynamics of solid and liquid group III-V alloys

Description: Solid-state electrochemical techniques are applied to the Ga-In-Sb-O system to measure some thermodynamic properties important for the analysis of solid-liquid phase equilibria in these important semiconductor materials. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of the most stable oxides of gallium and of indium are determined with a high-temperature solid-state electrochemical cell utilizing calcia-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte and a (CO + CO/sub 2/) gaseous mixture as the refere… more

K vacancy production in medium-Z heavy ion collisions

Description: During slow encounters between projectile and target atoms, the electronic atomic wave functions of the two collision partners distort and form molecular orbitals (MOs). K vacancy formation in slow heavy-ion collisions, which occur when electrons are excited out of the 2psigma and 1ssigma MOs, is considered. Experimental work using 200 MeV Kr ions is described. The main interest is the excitation of electrons from the 1ssigma MO. The 1ssigma vacancy production is only observed in very asymmetri… more

Far infrared spectroscopy of solids. I. Impurity states in Al$sub 2$O$sub 3$. II. Electron-hole droplets in Ge

Description: Far infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy was used to study the low lying vibronic states of Mn$sup 3+$ in Al$sub 2$O$sub 3$ and the plasma absorption of electron-hole droplets in Ge. The transmission of Mn-doped samples of Al$sub 2$O$sub 3$ was measured in the frequency range from 3 to 30 cm$sup -1$ in applied magnetic fields up to 50 kG. Absorption lines were observed due to both ground and excited state transitions. Polarization measurements established that these absorption lines were due… more
