Investigation of surface irregularities on an NACA 63(420)-416, a=1.0 airfoil section for the Glenn L. Martin Company design 195

Description: Report presenting the results of an investigation made in the two-dimensional low-turbulence pressure tunnel of surface irregularities on a low-drag airfoil section. The primary objective was to determine the effects of riveted and piano-hinge-type skin joints and of an aileron slot of the drag characteristics. Any type of surface irregularities at the front spar were found to cause substantial increase in drag.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Devices for Improving the Diving Characteristics of Airplanes

Description: Report discussing testing on a model of a pursuit type airplane to determine the effect of several devices that may be applied to improve the high-speed pitching-moment characteristics. Auxiliary flaps, a controllable stabilizer, and a change in wing contour were all found to help increase the amount of control when recovering from high-speed dives.

Tests of a 1/40-Scale Wing-Hull Model and a 1/10-Scale Float-Strut Model of the Hughes-Kaiser Cargo Airplane in the Two-Dimensional Low-Turbulence Pressure Tunnel

Description: Report presenting aerodynamic and hydrodynamic tests of a 1/10-scale wing-hull model and a 1/10-scale float-strut model of the proposed arrangement of the Hughes-Kaiser cargo airplane. The aerodynamic tests were made primarily to study the drag characteristics of these models as originally designed and to determine how the design could be improved. Results regarding the wing-hull model and float-strut model are provided.

High-speed wind-tunnel tests of a 1/14-scale model of a four-engine cargo airplane

Description: Report presenting tests on a scale model of a four-engine cargo airplane, which was tested in the high-speed wind tunnel. The high-speed characteristics of the airplane, particularly the longitudinal stability and control in dives were investigated. Test results indicated that no important changes in longitudinal stability or controllability occurred until the speed exceeded the predicted maximum level-flight speed by more than 38 percent.

Investigation of the Longitudinal Stability at High Speeds of a 1/5-Scale Model of a Tailless Pursuit Airplane

Description: "Tests of a tailless pursuit airplane model at the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory have shown that in conditions corresponding to level flight at a Mach number less than 0.7 and at an altitude under 35,000 feet, no serious compressibility effects occurred and that no sudden adverse diving moments were encountered up to a Mach number of 0.74, the maximum speed of the tests. However, there were indications that the elevons might lose their effectiveness for longitudinal control during a pull-out fro… more

Drag Measurements of a Protruding.50-Caliber Machine Gun with Barrel Jacket Removed

Description: Tests were made in 8-ft high-speed wind tunnel to determine the drag reduction possible by eliminating the barrel jacket of a protruding 50-caliber aircraft gun. It was found that the drag of a standard aircraft gun protruding into the air stream at right angles to the flow can be reduced by 23% by discarding the barrel jacket. At 300 mph and sea-level conditions, this amounts to a decrease in drag of from 83 to 64 pounds. A rough surface finish on the barrel was found to have no adverse effect… more
