Review of thermal expansion and density of uranium and plutonium carbides

Description: The published literature on linear thermal expansion and density of uranium and plutonium carbide nuclear fuels, including UC, PuC, (U,Pu)C, U$sub 2$C$sub 3$, Pu$sub 2$C$sub 3$, and (U,Pu)$sub 2$C$sub 3$, is critically reviewed. Recommended values are given in tabular form and additional experimental studies needed for completeness are outlined. 16 tables, 52 references. (auth)

Coherence in multilevel systems

Description: Mathematical descriptions of an excited state multilevel system are developed to include progressively the effects of coherent coupling, feeding, decay and relaxation, and the expressions are illustrated with several pulse coherence experiments utilizing zero field optically detected magnetic resonance of excited triplet states. A new method is described in which the time development of the coherent components in a multilevel system is monitored by using an observable that can measure only rela… more

Soil moisture transport in arid site vadose zones. [Evaluation of Hanford as national site for radioactive waste storage]

Description: Data are presented from measurements of soil moisture at the Hanford Reservation. Possible mechanisms for moisture transport in arid and semi-arid climates were studied. Measurements for the lysimeter experiment and the thermocouple psychrometer experiment were continued with a new series of measurements using closely spaced sensors installed to a depth of 1.52 meters. During the 1973-1974 water year the percolation envelope of higher moisture content penetrated to a depth of four meters in the… more

Low temperature lithium/sulfur secondary battery. Semiannual progress report, December 1, 1974--June 1, 1975. [Development of dissolved sulfur cathode operable at ambient temperatures]

Description: The objective of this program is to develop a dissolved sulfur cathode which can be repeatably charged and discharged with minimal degradation and which is compatible with a Li anode. The redox behavior of dilute S/sub 8/, 0.1--1M LiClO/sub 4/ solutions in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), dimethyl formamide (DMF), tetrahydrofuran (THF), propylene carbonate (PC), ..gamma..-butyrolactone (BL), sulfolane (SL), methyl acetate (MA) and pyridine was investigated. S/sub 8/ and S/sub 8//sup - -/ reductions o… more

Vibrations of circular cylindrical shells

Description: An exact solution method for the free vibration problem of thin circular cylindrical shells is presented. The differential equations of motion are solved directly with the use of simple Fourier series as the modal displacement functions. Stokes' transformation is exploited to obtain correct series expressions for the derivatives of the Fourier series. From this method an explicit expression of the exact frequency equation can be obtained for any kind of boundary conditions. The accuracy of the … more

Electronic state alignment, orientation, and coherence produced by beam-foil collisions

Description: The cylindrically symmetric beam-foil collision produces excitation and alignment of atom and ion levels similar, but not identical, to that resulting at comparable energies from ion-atom or ion-molecule collisions. When the foil is tilted, the macroscopic change acts on the microscopic scale to produce coherent alignment and orientation of the excited levels. The maximum beam energy range bounding this interaction has not yet been defined. The dynamic interaction which produces these effects i… more
