Temperature-Induced Stresses in Solids of Elementary Shape

Description: Report discussing how solids subjected to non-uniform temperature change develop internal stresses determined by, (1) the temperature distribution within the solid, and (2) certain physical constants of the material. For two varieties of heating, the equations determining stress have been put in convenient form for practical use, and tables of certain temperature functions show how to determine stresses in a slab, in a cylinder, or in a sphere subjected to either of two modes of heating. The te… more

Reactions of Preoxidized Beryllium Powder in Moist Carbon Dioxide

Description: Breakaway corrosion of Be in moist CO2 can be avoided if the Be is fabricated using preoxidized powder. The powder is preoxidized by heating in dry O/sub 2/. Preoxidation of Be powder was measured as a function of temperature and time of heating in O/sub 2/. The subsequent reactions of the preoxidized powder in moist CO/sub 2/ at 700 deg C were studied and the effect of increasing amounts of added oxide was measured. A model is proposed to explain the inhibition of corrosion by added oxide. (au… more

Symbols for Instrument Flowsheets and Drawings : a Recommended System for Application to ORNL Instrument Work

Description: This report supersedes ORNL CF-57-2-1, which was an extension and revision of ORNL CF-54-6-72. Details concerning a recommended system of flow-plan symbols and drawing are given. The system is designed to identify the function of all major instrument components and to show schematically the operation of the instrument relative to the particular process. The system is used for identification and designation. The system is a modification of the Instrument Society of American Recommended Practice … more

Proposed graphite coring patterns for B, D, F, DR, and H Reactors

Description: Heat transfer calculations were performed with the aid of the IBM 7090 to determine whether or not feasible graphite channel coring patterns could be adopted at the five older Hanford Reactors. The purpose of front and rear process channel coring is to significantly reduce or eliminate net expansion of the fringe graphite by raising the operating temperature above the annealing temperature of 300{degree}C. The results of the study show that such coring patterns are possible. Also, it was found … more

K Reactor moderator distortion study

Description: Irradiation-induced moderator distortion has plagued the Hanford reactors from their earliest days until the present. The first-manifestation of graphite distortion was in the form of expansion of the B, D and F stacks. It was found that expansion was very temperature-dependent and could be reversed by raising the graphite operating temperature. The DR, H, C and K Reactors were designed with provisions to minimize, or accommodate expansion. It was not until after the K Reactors had been designe… more

Effect of S8DR chromium diffusion treatment on the creep rupture properties of processed Hastelloy-N tubing

Description: Process development personnel have been seeking means of improving the (after thermal exposure) adhesion of the S8DR ceramic coating to chromized Hastelloy N tubing. This effort has led to the incorporation of an elevated temperature chromium diffusion treatment prior to the application of the ceramic coating. This report describes the results of tests performed to ascertain the influence of the additional thermal treatment on the 1400/sup 0/F creep-rupture properties of S8DR tubing.

STUDY OF RESONANCES IN THE Σ-π SYSTEM

Description: In order to study resonances in the {Sigma}-{pi} system, we have analyzed reactions in which a {Sigma} hyperon and two or three pions are produced in K{sup -}-p interactions at 1.22 {+-} 0.040 and 1.51 {+-} 0.050 GeV/c incident K{sup -} momentum (i. e., 1895 and 2025 MeV center-of-mass energy), using the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory's 72-in. hydrogen bubble chamber.
