Tests of four models representing intermediate sections of the XB-33 airplane including sections with slotted flap and ailerons

Description: Report presenting testing in the two-dimensional tunnel of four models submitted by the Glenn L. Martin Company as intermediate sections of the wing of the XB-33 airplane. Each airfoil model had different types of flaps or no flaps at all. Results regarding the lift and drag data, lift coefficients, effect of flap positions, aileron effects, drag coefficients, and hinge-moment coefficients are provided.

Effects of Combinations of Aspect Ratio and Sweepback at High Subsonic Mach Numbers

Description: Report discussing an investigation to determine the effects of sweepback and low aspect ratio on the aerodynamic characteristics of a wing at high subsonic Mach numbers. Tests were performed at aspect ratios of 2, 3, and 5 and sweepback angles of 0, 30, and 45 degrees. Generally, sweepback and low aspect ratio were found to both delay and lessen the effects of compressibility.

Flight Investigation at High Speeds of the Drag of Three Airfoils and a Circular Cylinder Representing Full-Scale Propeller Shanks

Description: "Tests have been made at high speeds to determine the drag of models, simulating propeller shanks, in the form of a circular cylinder and three airfoils, the NACA 16-025, the NACA 16-040, and the NACA 16-040 with the rear 25 percent chord cut off. All the models had a maximum thickness of 4 1/2 inches to conform with average propeller-shank dimensions and a span of 20 1/4 inches. General chemistry progress report

Description: Decomposition potentials of bismuth solutions of 1.037 and 0.509 grams of the metal per 100 ml. of 1.5 nitric acid were found to be -0.06 and -0.09 volts to N.C.E. These results confirm previous values and indicate that bismuth will not be reduced from production solutions at the potential of the normal calomel electrode. A summary of research in progress, completed, or anticipated is given.

A Simplified Method for Elastic Stability Analysis for Thin Cylindrical Shells 2: Modified Equilibrium Equation

Description: Note presenting a derivation of a modified form of Donnell's equation for the equilibrium of thin cylindrical shells which is equivalent to Donnell's equation but has certain advantages in physical interpretation and in ease of solution, particularly in the case of shells with clamped edges. The modified equation can be solved for the buckling stresses of curved sheet having either simply supported or clamped edges by established methods essentially equivalent to those in use for flat sheet.

Description: Note presenting a theoretical solution for the buckling stresses of long plates with transverse curvature loaded in shear and longitudinal direct stress. The theoretical critical-stress combinations for plates with either simply supported or clamped edges are given in figures and tables and a comparison is made with previous theoretical solutions.
