Study of the comparative costs of five wet/dry cooling tower concepts

Description: A previous study undertaken to ascertain the economic incentives for further development of advanced dry/wet cooling towers showed that an advanced dry cooling concept using ammonia as an intermediate cooling fluid reduced the incremental cost of dry cooling by approximately 25 to 30%. This paper presents the projected costs of five alternative dry/wet concepts, one of which involves a similar use of ammonia. This study concludes that although absolute quantitative cost estimates for these cool… more

User's guide to the LLL BASIC interpreter. [For 8080-based MCS-80 microcomputer system]

Description: Scientists are finding increased applications for microcomputers as process controllers in their experiments. However, while microcomputers are small and inexpensive, they are difficult to program in machine or assembly language. A high-level language is needed to enable scientists to develop their own microcomputer programs for their experiments on location. Recognizing this need, LLL contracted to have such a language developed. This report describes the result--the LLL BASIC interpreter, whi… more

Thermal Shock Experiment (TSEX): a ''proof-of-principle'' evaluation of the use of electron beam heating to simulate the thermal mechanical environment anticipated for the first wall of the Reference Theta-Pinch Reactor (RTPR)

Description: The results of a ''proof-of-principle'' Thermal Shock Experiment (TSEX), designed to simulate the thermal mechanical response of insulator-metal composite first walls anticipated for pulsed high-density fusion reactors, are given. A programmable 10-kV, 1.0-A electron beam was used to pulse repeatedly (0.30-mm)Al/sub 2/O/sub 3//(1.0-mm) Nb-1Zr composite samples 200 to 300 K, relative to a base-line temperature of 1000 K. The experimental goals of TSEX were established relative to the first-wall … more

Functional-integral formulations for plasma instabilities and turbulence; analogies with phase-transition phenomena

Description: The formalism of Martin, Siggia and Rose is utilized to write a functional-integral representation for generating functionals in plasma transport theory, following Nakayama and Dawson. Parallel treatments of Navier-Stokes turbulence (attempted by Rosen) and of critical dynamics, by Kawasaki, are compared to illustrate the application of common field-theory techniques, such as the effective action. Quasi-classical methods for functional integrals are discussed.

High energy hadron dynamics based on a Stochastic-field multi-eikonal theory

Description: Multi-eikonal theory, using a stoichastic-field representation for collective long range rapidity correlations, is developed and applied to the calculation of Regge pole parameters, high transverse momentum enhancements, and fluctuation patterns in rapidity densities. If a short-range-order model, such as the one-dimensional planar bootstrap, with only leading t-channel meson poles, is utilized as input to the multi-eikonal method, the pole spectrum is modified in three ways; promotion and reno… more

Neutron total cross-section measurements of /sup 9/Be, /sup 10/ /sup 11/B, and /sup 12/ /sup 13/C from 1. 0 to 14 MeV using the /sup 9/Be(d,n)/sup 10/B reaction as a ''white'' neutron source

Description: High-resolution and high-accuracy total cross sections of /sup 9/Be, /sup 10/ /sup 11/B, and /sup 12/ /sup 13/C have been measured from 1.0 to 14 MeV. The Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) tandem accelerator was used to produce a ''white'' source of neutrons by stopping a pulsed beam of 15-MeV deuterons in a thick beryllium target. The neutron energy resolution (full width at half maximum (FWHM)) achieved in kiloelectron volts is given by 1.4 E (MeV)/sup /sup 3///sub 2//, and the accuracy… more

Streak camera techniques

Description: An introduction to streak camera geometry, experimental techniques, and limitations are presented. Equations, graphs and charts are included to provide useful data for optimizing the associated optics to suit each experiment. A simulated analysis is performed on simultaneity and velocity measurements. An error analysis is also performed for these measurements utilizing the Monte Carlo method to simulate the distribution of uncertainties associated with simultaneity-time measurements.

Hydrodynamic behavior of a bare rod bundle. [LMFBR]

Description: The temperature distribution within the rod bundle of a nuclear reactor is of major importance in nuclear reactor design. However temperature information presupposes knowledge of the hydrodynamic behavior of the coolant which is the most difficult part of the problem due to complexity of the turbulence phenomena. In the present work a 2-equation turbulence model--a strong candidate for analyzing actual three dimensional turbulent flows--has been used to predict fully developed flow of infinite … more

Preliminary flowsheet for the conversion of Hanford high-level waste to glass

Description: The flowsheets describe a process for converting waste removed from the Hanford underground waste tanks to more immobile form. Systematics of neutron-induced fisson cross sections over the energy range 0. 1 MeV to 15 MeV and at 0. 0253 eV

Description: Previous studies by Behrens have provided evidence of systematic behavior in neutron-induced fission cross sections in the incident neutron energy range 3 to 5 MeV. Recently measured fission cross-section ratios revealed this behavior. In this report, these measurements and those of others are used to illustrate the behavior of fission cross sections over the neutron energy range 0.1 MeV to 15 MeV. Similar trends are seen at 0.0253 eV, as revealed by thermal cross-section measurements. 12 figur… more
