Maximizing the value of thermally integrated hydroelectric generating facilities

Description: This paper presents a demonstration of a phenomenon known as hydro-shifting, which relates to the provision of two sources of electric power to customers. The extent that these resources are used in each period is shown to depend partly on the time of day in which the power is provided. Although the dispatcher could combine thermal resales with hydro power in equal proportions for its customers in both periods, a rationalization is presented that justifies the withholding of some water until th… more

Temperature-Humidity-Bias Aging Technique to Identify Defective Surface Mount Capacitors

Description: Ceramic chip capacitors can potentially crack due to thermal stresses in a surface mount assembly process. The electrical performance of the cracked capacitors will degrade with time, and they will prematurely short. In high reliability applications, the cracked capacitors must be identified and eliminated. We have developed and demonstrated the temperature-humidity-bias (THB) aging technique to identify cracked capacitors. The initial phase of the study involved setting up automated test equip… more

Advantages of palmolive alternate

Description: It has been proposed that Pu-238 be produced by irradiating neptunium solution in one or more loops in a reactor and then recovering the Pu-238 in a close-coupled separations plant. Such a scheme could replace the more conventional scheme of solid element fabrication, irradiation, and reprocessing for plutonium and neptunium recovery. This document presents the advantages of such a scheme from the standpoint of product purity and Pu-238 production.

Design of new polymers to improve radiation stability of plastic scintillators

Description: Diffusion enhancers have been used to increase the radiation stability of scintillators. There is a danger that such additions will also allow the scintillation dyes to diffuse out of the matrix. Covalent bonding of the dyes into the matrix would eliminate any luminophore migration. We have demonstrated that dyes with vinyl and divinyl groups can be successfully bonded into a styrene matrix. Both primary and secondary luminophores have been bonded into the matrix and in several cases they have … more

User`s guide for the POISSON/SUPERFISH Group of Codes

Description: The POISSON/SUPERFISH Group Codes are a set of programs written by Ronald Holsinger, with theoretical assistance from Klaus Halbach, to solve two distinct problems--the calculation of magnetostatic and electrostatic fields, and the computation of the resonant frequencies and fields in radio-frequency cavities--in a two-dimensional Cartesian or three-dimensional cylindrical geometry. These codes are widely used for the design of magnets and radio frequency cavities.

Fundamental Studies of Retrograde Reactions in Direct Liquefaction. Topical Report, September 30, 1988--September 30, 1989

Description: Most of the proposed processing schemes for improving liquefaction yields involve favoring bond-breaking and radical stabilization reactions over the retrograde reactions. The retrograde reactions are often encountered before liquefaction temperatures are reached. The objective of this program is to elucidate and model the retrograde reaction chemistry in direct coal liquefaction through the application of experimental techniques and theoretical models which have been successfully employed at A… more

Separation of organic ion exchange resins from sludge -- engineering study

Description: This engineering study evaluates the use of physical separation technologies to separate organic ion exchange resin from KE Basin sludge prior to nitric acid dissolution. This separation is necessitate to prevent nitration of the organics in the acid dissolver. The technologies under consideration are: screening, sedimentation, elutriation. The recommended approach is to first screen the Sludge and resin 300 microns then subject the 300 microns plus material to elutriation.

Precision of gamma-ray measurements of the effective specific power and effective {sup 240}Pu fraction of plutonium

Description: This paper uses gamma-ray spectrometry data from replicate measurements on 40 plutonium-bearing samples to examine the repeatability of the effective {sup 240}Pu fraction ({sup 240}Pu{sub eff}) and the effective specific power (P{sub eff}) calculated from the isotopic distribution analyzed with gamma-ray spectrometry codes. The measurements were used to identify the error component arising from repeatability in the determination of the isotopic composition of plutonium in the sample and the con… more

Nuclear Bragg scattering studies in {sup 57}Fe with synchrotron radiation

Description: Studies of nuclear Bragg x-ray scattering of synchrotron radiation, using crystals of {alpha}-{sup 57}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 3}, have been carried out at the NSLS at Brookhaven National Laboratory and at the Cornell University CHESS facility. These studies have demonstrated that nuclear resonance states can be used to produce filtered x-ray beams which have extremely narrow bandwidth, small angular divergence and unique polarization and temporal properties. this combination of characteristics, unobtain… more

Decontamination and treatment of high level liquid mixed waste to meet regulatory compliance issues outlined in Federal Facilities Agreements

Description: High-Level Radioactive Liquid waste is stored in underground storage tanks at the US Department of Energy`s Savannah River Site (SRS) located south of Aiken, SC. Treatment and disposal of this liquid Hazardous and Radioactive (Mixed) Waste required the negotiation and approval of a Federal Facility Agreement (FFA) between the DOE, EPA and the South Carolina state regulatory agency. This agreement which also addresses many other waste sites at SRS was approved in January 1993. Included in this F… more

Feasibility Study for an Advanced Coal Fired Heat Exchanger/Gas Turbine Topping Cycle for a High Efficiency Power Plant. Final Report

Description: Significant improvements in efficiency for the conversion of coal into electricity can be achieved by cycles which employ a high temperature gas turbine topping cycle. The objective of this project is the development of an externally fired gas turbine system. The project computationally tested a new concept for a High Temperature Advanced Furnace (HITAF) and high temperature heat exchanger with a proprietary design to reduce the problems associated with the harsh coal environment. The program a… more

Expression of cytoskeletal and matrix genes following exposure to ionizing radiation: Dose-rate effects and protein synthesis requirements

Description: Experiments were designed to examine the effects Of radiation dose-rate and of the protein synthesis inhibitor cycloheximide on expression of cytoskeletal elements ({gamma}- and {beta}-actin and {alpha}-tubulin) and matrix elements (fibronectin) in Syrian hamster embryo cells. Past work from our laboratory had already demonstrated optimum time points and doses for examination of radiation effects on accumulation of specific transcripts. Our results here demonstrated little effect of dose-rate f… more

Long-range forces and the collisions of free-molecular and transition regime aerosols

Description: An aerosol here is understood to be a two-component system comprised of gaseous and condensed phases with the characteristic that the condensed phase is not an equilibrium subsystem. In contrast to the usual definitions based upon geometrical or mechanical variables, this quasi-thermodynamic formulation is framed to emphasize the dynamical behavior of aerosols by allowing for coagulation and other aerosol evolutionary processes as natural consequences of the interactions and state variables app… more

Production test IP-165-C continuous monitoring of front-to-rear flux balance, Final report

Description: Nuclear reactors which contain a significantly large volume operating at or near the same flux level are subject to oscillations of the maximum flux from one region of the reactor to another. To control these flux movements it is necessary to know the location of the flux ``peaks`` and ``valleys`` and the rate of change of the flux at these points. Existing monitoring instruments readily present only a two-dimensional picture of the flux distribution within the reactor; the front-to-rear distri… more

Kinetics studies following state-selective laser excitation. Final progress report, March 15, 1984--July 15, 1993

Description: The objective of this contract was the study of state-to-state, electronic energy transfer reactions relevant to the excited state chemistry observed in discharges. We studied deactivation reactions and excitation transfer in collisions of excited states of xenon and krypton atoms with Ar, Kr, Xe and chlorine. The reactant states were excited selectively in two-photon transitions using tunable u.v. and v.u.v. lasers. Excited states produced by the collision were observed by their fluorescence. … more
