Initial Experiments on the Brookhaven Reactor. VI. Fast Source Correction for Diffusion Length Measurements on BNL Reactor

Description: In a manner somewhat analogue to that employed by R. Margulies in his memo (BNL Log No. C-2985) on fast source corrections in sigma piles, corrections to be applied to the data obtained on the laid-up graphite in the BNL reactor have been calculated. The correction was computed for a Ra-Be source using the data of Seren and using a standard graphite density for the BNL pile of 1.69. Values of the correction for different experimental sets of data were computed for each of three different diffus… more

Supplemental Technical Report on an Improved Process for the Manufacture of High Purity Calcium, Period Covered November 10, 1948 to January 31, 1949

Description: Abstract. Experimental work was carried out to improve material conversion efficiency and to reduce handling costs inherent in the present process for production of high purity calcium. Charges up to 54 pounds were handled successfully in the equipment available. Material losses were reduced and more complete removal of alkali and alkaline earth metals was effected by controlled pressures of inert gas and by melting under positive pressure of Argon.

A Comparative Analysis of the Liquid Metal Heat Transfer Systems for WMA

Description: Introduction. As stated in Report KAPL 116, one of the objectives of the KAPL reactor is "to provide a prototype demonstration of the practical general of electrical power from Nuclear energy using molten sodium as the primary coolant. The reactor will generate steam at a temperature of 550 degrees F and 465 psia, including 90 degree superheat potentially capable of an efficiency of twenty-eight per cent in electrical output." The work reported here is intended to increase the scope and supply … more

The Chelate Process: [Part] 5. Investigation in Horizontal Extractors

Description: The recovery of plutonium has been demonstrated in a laboratory countercurrent horizontal extractor using the TTA process. Using three extractive stages and two washing stages in each step, a recovery of 91 percent has been obtained in the chelation step and a recovery of 99.9+ percent in the de-chelation step. With five extractive stages, recoveries of 94-98 percent have been found for the chelation step.

Summary of the Research Progress Meeting of September 1, 1949

Description: The absolute excitation functions for the production of fission by charged particle bombardment in several substances were investigated at both high and low energies. The low energy work was done at the 60-inch Crocker cyclotron with alpha particles and deuterons, while the high energy work was done at the 184-inch cyclotron with alpha particles, deuterons, and protons.

Use of the Characteristics of Permalloy in Detecting a Predetermined Value of Magnetic Field or Current in a Time-Varying Electromagnet: 1/4 Scale Bevatron Operating Model, Magnetic Field Strength-Magnet Current Correspondence

Description: In programming the sequence of events in the operational cycle of the bevatron, certain devices must be triggered at specific values of magnetic field strength in the gap. It is desirable that the time-jitter, which corresponds to field jitter, of the tirggering pulses be small. In the synchrotron this is done with peaking strips which are located in the fringing field of the gap.

Method of Operation of the Permeameter

Description: In H measurements, the measured flux-linkage change represents twice the value of H to be plotted. In B measurements the bucking coil links flux equal to the air-flux in the B-measuring coils. The measured flux change therefore corresponds to twice the flux of intrinsic magnetization in the sample.

The Distribution of the Positive-Negative Ratio for Mesons

Description: Positive and negative mesons produced in a common target in the cyclotron are received in two photographic plates. In the magnetic field of the cyclotron, negatives are deflected to one plate, positives to the other. The mesons must pass through an absorber before entering the plates in order to be observable.

Corrosion resistance and magnetic susceptibility

Description: From summary: "On the basis of the tests described herein, the corrosion characteristics of T-347 welded stainless steel are found not to be affected by the magnetic properties of the welds even though these properties are likely the result of the presence of the ferritic structure."
