Preliminary investigation of the flying qualities of airplanes

Description: "The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics is undertaking an investigation of the flying qualities of airplanes. The work consists in the determination of the significant qualities susceptible of measurement, the development of the instruments required to make the measurements, and the accumulation of data on the flying qualities of existing airplanes, which data are to serve as a basis for quantitative specifications for the flying qualities of future designs" (p. 449).

Flow coefficients of monosleeve valves

Description: The flow coefficients of the intake and the exhaust ports of a sleeve-valve cylinder were measured by attaching the cylinder to a large tank and measuring the changes in pressure and temperature in the tank that were caused by short periods of air flow through the valve ports. Determination of the Characteristics of Tapered Wings

Description: This report presents tables and charts for use in determining the characteristics of tapered wings. Theoretical factors are given from which the following characteristics of tapered wings may be found: the span lift distribution, the induced-angle-of attack distribution, the lift-curve slope, the angle of zero lift, the induced drag, the aerodynamic-center position, and the pitching moment about the aerodynamic center.

General Potential Theory of Arbitrary Wing Section

Description: This report gives the exact treatment of the problem of determining the 2-dimensional potential flow around wing sections of any type. The treatment is based directly on the solution of this problem as advanced by Theodorsen in NACA-TR-411. The problem condenses into the compact form of an integral equation capable of yielding numerical solutions by a direct process.

Preliminary Tests in the NACA Tank to Investigate the Fundamental Characteristics of Hydrofoils

Description: A preliminary investigation made to study the hydrodynamic properties and general behavior of simple hydrofoils. Six plain, rectangular hydrofoils were tested in a tank at various speeds, angles of attack, and depths below the water surface. The results are presented as curves of the lift and drag coefficients plotted against speed for various angles of attack and depths for which the hydrofoils were tested.

High-speed drag tests of several fuselage shapes in combination with a wing

Description: Drag testing was conducted in the high-speed wind tunnel of 23 conditions combining six streamline shapes and three conventional cowling-fuselage bodies. All of the models were tested in combination with a wing in order to include wing-fuselage interference effects. The critical speeds of combinations tested were, in general, determined by the wing-fuselage juncture.

Wind Tunnel Tests of a Submerged-Engine Fuselage Design

Description: Report presenting tests conducted in the 8-foot high-speed wind tunnel of a scale model pursuit-type fuselage with practicable internal duct arrangement designed to meet all of the air requirements of a 1000-horsepower radial engine submerged at the maximum section. The results showed that the required internal flow can be obtained with negligible ducting losses provided that basic principles are observed in designing the air passages.

The Design of Cooling Ducts With Special Reference to the Boundary Layer at the Inlet

Description: "A study has been made of underslung cooling ducts with special references to the problems presented by the boundary layer on the fuselage skin. It was found that good flow can be obtained in such ducts by (1) making the inlet opening of such size that the mean inlet velocity is about 0.6 the free-stream velocity and (2) providing vanes behind as well as ahead of the radiator. A graphical method of determining pressure distribution in two-dimensional flow

Description: By a generalization of the Joukowski method, a procedure is developed for effecting localized modifications of airfoil shapes and for determining graphically the resultant changes in the pressure distribution. The application of the procedure to the determination of the pressure distribution over airfoils of original design is demonstrated. Formulas for the lift, the moment, and the aerodynamic center are also given.

Description: Report presenting determinations of boundary-layer transition on the NACA 0012 and 23012 airfoils in the high-speed wind tunnel over a range of Reynolds numbers. For all of the lift coefficients that testing occurred at, transition occurred in the region of estimated laminar separation at low Reynolds numbers and approached the point of minimum static pressure as a forward limit at high Reynolds numbers.
