Review of BPA Funded Sturgeon, Resident Fish and Wildlife Projects for 1990/1991.

Description: The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) held a public meeting on November 19--21, 1991, for the purpose of review, coordination, and consultation of the BPA-funded projects for sturgeon, resident fish, and wildlife in the Columbia River Basin (Basin). The comments received after the meeting were favorable and the participants agreed that the meeting was stimulating and productive. The information exchanged should lead to better coordination with other projects throughout the Basin. This docum… more

Fabric space radiators

Description: Future Air Force space missions will require thermal radiators that both survive in the hostile space environment and stow away for minimal bulk during launch. Advances in all aspects of radiator design, construction, and analysis will be necessary to enable such future missions. Currently, the best means for obtaining high strength along with flexibility is through structures known as fabrics. The development of new materials and bonding techniques has extended the application range of fabrics… more

Pi-decay muons from the SLC positron source

Description: This note extends the calculations presented in CN-295 (''additional muon calculations for the SLC positron source'') by taking into account the photoproduction of pions in the SLC positron target with subsequent decay into muons. By taking into account the probability of pion interaction in the target/wave guide/solenoid complex versus decay in drift reqions, we have concluded that this source of muons will not significanly contribute to the overall levels presented in the previous note.

Preliminary tests of overburden material filtration and capture bag concept: Phase II

Description: The experimental work described in this report was performed to provide test data for the Nuclear Emergency Search Team (NEST) Damage Limitation Working Group. These tests extended our previous test results of shock absorption and aerosol filtration under transient air-flow conditions. Two types of experiments were run using two separate apparatus. Nylon fabric capture bags were structurally tested on a small shock tube similar to the shock tube used in the Phase I tests but capable of higher-p… more

Development of Electrolysis-Cell Separator for 125/sup 0/C Operation. Advanced Alkaline Electrolysis Cell Development. Final Report

Description: This report contains the findings of a seven-month contracted effort. The major technical task involved a 125/sup 0/C operating temperature test of the 20 v/o polybenzimidazole (PBI) - 80 v/o potassium titanate (K/sub 2/TiO/sub 3/) separator in combination with the nickel-molybdenum cathode electrocatalyst system dubbed the C-AN cathode using the ARIES test system which was developed previously. The test of the PBI-K/sub 2/TiO/sub 3/ separator was only partially successful. The anticipated 1.85… more

Data report, oceanographic data from moored instrumentation: velocity, temperature, and salinity off Shinnecock, Long Island, in May 1977

Description: Four instrumented moorings were deployed in the near-shore region off Shinnecock, Long Island, in May 1977. Each mooring had four sensor packages at distributed depths recording velocity, conductivity, and temperature over hourly intervals. The information was radioed to Brookhaven National Laboratory. Three moorings performed satisfactorily. Buoy 1 data suffered frequent gaps due to weak transmissions. The average period of operation was 25 days. The data are shown here through statistics, rea… more

Estimating Long-Term Statistics for Annual Precipitation for Six Regions of the United States From Tree-Ring Data

Description: Spatial anomalies of seasonal precipitation for the United States and southwestern Canada have been reconstructed from 1602 through 1961 using dendrochronological and multivariate techniques on 65 arid-site tree-ring chronologies from western North America. Seasonal reconstructions are averaged to obtain mean annual precipitation values for six regions of importance to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Nuclear Waste Management Program (NWMP). Statistics calculated from the regionally aver… more

(Energy related studies utilizing microline thermochronology)

Description: The past two years of research conducted have been fruitful and exciting. Using Microcline Thermochronology (MTC), we have investigated the hydrothermal maturity of the Salton Sea Geothermal Field, potential for hydrocarbon maturation associated with heating due to ridge subduction beneath accretionary prism sediments, developed a single crystal dating system which has proven to greatly enhance interpretations regarding MTC, and also have begun to develop sound theoretical and experimental tech… more

Studies of membrane structure by freeze-etching. Progress report

Description: The researchers devised a rapid procedure for measuring covalent bond breakage in a simple model system to determine the extent to which glycophorin was cleaved when the frozen vesicles were fractured. Evidence showed that no covalent bonds are broken during the fracture procedure. Membrane splitting was shown to be quantified under special circumstances when erythrocyte membranes are appressed to a polylysine-coated surface. Results show that freeze fracture at temperatures below that of liqui… more

Development of low cost contacts to silicon solar cells. Semi-annual report, 15 Octobr 1978--31 May 1979

Description: The 7 months of the original contract have been completed. A number of different electroless plating systems have been evaluated in conjunction with copper electroplating and a final contact system has been settled on. All tests have involved simultaneous deposition of front and back contacts using a standard silicon cell material throughout the contract. Cells with good adhesion and good curve fill factors have been obtained using a palladium-chromium-copper metallization system. Forty 2 1/4 i… more

Development of multibarrier nuclear waste forms

Description: The multibarrier concept aims to separate the radionuclide-containing inner core material and the environment by the use of coatings and matrices. Two options were developed for the inner core of the multibarrier concept: supercalcine pellets and glass marbles. Supercalcine is a crystalline assemblage of mutually compatible, refractory, and leach-resistant solid solution phases incorporating high-level liquid waste ions. Supercalcine powder is produced by spray calcining the liquid waste stream… more

Effects of phase transformation of steam-water relative permeabilities

Description: A combined theoretical and experimental study of steam-water relative permeabilities (RPs) was carried out. First, an experimental study of two-phase concurrent flow of steam and water was conducted and a set of RP curves was obtained. These curves were compared with semi-empirical and experimental results obtained by other investigators for two-phase, two-component flow (oil/gas; gas/water; gas/oil). It was found that while the wetting phase RPs were in good agreement, RPs for the steam phase … more

Ultrasonic cleaning of depleted uranium material as an alternative to nitric acid cleaning

Description: Nitric acid is used to clean depleted uranium in the form of cast billets, and cast and wrought parts in the processing cycle and is the largest contributor of waste to the West End Treatment Facility (WETF). An estimated 27,000 gallons of liquid and 75 to 95% of all uranium received was sent to the WETF for processing from this facility in our baseline year. Because wrought parts account for the largest throughput at the nitric acid facility, an alternative cleaning method for these parts was … more
