Uranium-Vanadium Deposits of the Cottonwood Wash Mining Area: San Juan County, Utah

Description: Introduction: This study was made in conjunction with a core drilling program designed to trace ore trends from existing mines eastward under deeper cover. The exploration drilling covered an area of about 1 square mile. The results of previous drilling by the Commission, which covered an additional 10 square miles, have been incorporated in this report.

Design and Feasibility Study of a Pebble Bed Reactor-Steam Power Plant

Description: Originally issued as S and P 1963A, Parts I and II. This report covers a design and feasibility study of a pebble bed reactor-steam power plant of 125 megawatt electrical output. The reactor design which evolved from this study is a two-region thermal breeder, operating on the uranium-thorium cycle, in which all core structural materials are graphite. Fuel is in the form of unclad spherical elements of graphite, containing fissile and fertile material. The primary loop consists of the reactor … more

Potential Applications of Nuclear Energy for Process and Space Heat in the United States

Description: A survey and analysis of the potential opportunity for the use of nuclear reactors to satisfy process and space heat requirements in the continental United States and Alaska has been completed. The greatest emphasis has been devoted to manufacturing industries that utilize large quantities of process heat.

Design of an Eddy-Current Brake for a Sodium-Cooled Nuclear Power Reactor

Description: Two eddy-current electromagnets to act as brskes were designed and installed in the sodium-cooled nuclear pcwer reactor SRE to throttle sodium flow throughout the reactor after shutdown in order to maintain a constant reactor temperature gradient. One brake was used on the primary piping system, the other on the secondary system. It was determined that the eddy-current brake should cause a dragging pressure of 0.3 psi at a flow rate of 12 gal/min. The flux density necessary to produce this pres… more

THE RADIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT AND RECOVERY OF CONTAMINATED AREAS

Description: The Civil Effects Test Operation Exercise CEX-57.1 following Operation Plumbbob was carried out to obtain information on decontamination procedures that could be used as radiological countermeasures. The test was conducted on D + 1 and D + 2 days after shot Coulomb C. Data were obtained on reclamation of land areas by scraping with a motorgrader, on fire-hosing and scrubbing a concrete- slab roof, and on fire-hosing a composition roof. In addition, some shielding data were obtained for a small … more

SAFETY AND OPERABILITY REVIEW OF EXPERIMENTS TO BE OPERATED IN NUCLEAR REACTORS AT ORNL

Description: The operation of the tests and experiments conducted in the ORR, the LITR, and the ORNL Graphite Reactor is discussed. In order to minimize the possibility of any hazardous conditions developing into an incident involving the safety of personnel, the reactor, and other equipment, any experiment design and installation should be checked or reviewed to ensure that all conceivable dangers are recognized and that appropriate safeguards have been incorporated into the design. Polyurethane Gamma Radiation Resistance. Preliminary Report, May 15, 1958- December 1, 1958

Description: Samples of two high-strength thermoplastic polyurethane Estane elastemers and one high-strength thermoset Estane elastomer were prepared and about a dozen different physical properties as well as infrared and ultraviolet absorption spectra determined for each composition. Radiation doses of 6 to 26 x 10/sup 6/ roentgens were applied to Polyurethane VC samples in air and in nitrogen environments and in a 50 micron vacuum. Infrared and ultraviolet absorption spectra changes in the polymer attendi… more
