Wall interference in a two-dimensional-flow wind tunnel with consideration of the effect of compressibility

Description: Report presenting tunnel-wall corrections for an airfoil of finite thickness and camber in a two-dimensional-flow wind tunnel. The theory takes account of the effects of the wake of the airfoil and of the compressibility of the fluid and is based on the assumption that the chord of the airfoil is small in comparison with the height of the tunnel. The theoretical results are compared with the small amount of low-speed experimental data available and agreement is seen to be satisfactory, even for… more

Derivation of charts for determining the horizontal tail load variation with any elevator motion

Description: Report presenting equations relating the wing and tail loads are derived for a unit elevator displacement. The equations are converted into a nondimensoinal form and charts are given that can be used to predict wing- and tail-load-increment variation for any type of elevator motion and for degrees of airplane stability.

Icing Tests of Aircraft-Engine Induction Systems

Description: Report presenting a program of icing tests conducted on an aircraft-engine induction system consisting of a Wright R-1820, G-200 blower section, Holley 1375-F carburetor and adapter, and specially built air scoop. The primary purpose of the investigation was to determine the effect of a number of possible factors on icing of engine-induction systems, including carburetor-air temperature, air-moisture content, water-droplet size, throttle opening, mixture ratio, rate of air flow, altitude, and o… more

Wind-Tunnel Tests of the 1/8-Scale Powered Model of the Curtiss XBTC-2 Airplane 1: Preliminary Investigation of Longitudinal Stability

Description: Report presenting a series of wind-tunnel tests made in the 7- by 10-foot tunnel of the Curtiss XBTC-2 model with power. The object of the tests was to determine and to improve, as necessary, the complete aerodynamic characteristics of the model. The report includes the results of the longitudinal stability investigation of the original model along with results from tests of various modifications.

Single-Cylinder Oil-Control Tests of Porous Chrome Plated Cylinder Barrels for Radial Air-Cooled Engines

Description: Report presenting a series of single-cylinder engine tests run to determine a satisfactory method of reducing oil consumption in radial air-cooled engines with flat-face compression rings as standard parts and equipped with cylinder barrels salvaged by porous chrome plating. Testing was conducted using porous chrome-plated cylinders with straight and choke bores with standard flat-face compression rings.

The Effect of Increased Cooling Surface on Performance of Aircraft-Engine Cylinders as Shown by Tests of the NACA Cylinder

Description: Report presenting a method of constructing fins of nearly optimum proportions to the point where a cylinder has been manufactured and tested. Data were obtained on cylinder temperature for a wide range of inlet-manifold pressures, engine speeds, and cooling-pressure differences. Results regarding cooling equations, cylinder-temperature relationships, and a comparison of three cylinder cooling performances are provided.

Laminar-boundary-layer oscillations and transition on a flat plate

Description: Report presenting an investigation of oscillations in the laminar boundary layer on a flat plate and their relation to transition to turbulent flow. The characteristics of boundary-layer oscillations were studied most successfully when the oscillations were artificially produced by a vibrating ribbon placed in the boundary layer near the surface. A review of theory regarding laminar-boundary-layer oscillations is provided.

A laboratory investigation of the icing characteristics of the Bendix-Stromberg carburetor model PD-12F5 with the Pratt and Whitney R-1830-C4 intermediate rear engine section

Description: Report presenting icing tests on a Bendix-Stromberg PD-12F5 carburetor mounted on a Pratt & Whitney R-1830-C4 intermediate rear engine section. Limiting icing conditions were established for simulated cruising power and simulated rated power over a range of carburetor-air temperatures, and relative humidities are provided.

A Theoretical Investigation of the Lateral Oscillations of an Airplane With Free Rudder With Special Reference to the Effect of Friction

Description: Report presenting charts showing the variation in dynamic stability with the rudder hinge-moment characteristics. A stabilizing rudder floating tendency combined with a high degree of aerodynamic balance is shown to lead to oscillations of increasing amplitude.

Effect of the Performance of a Turbosupercharged Engine of an Exhaust-Gas-to-Air Heat Exchanger for Thermal Ice Prevention

Description: This report presents the results of a flight investigation to determine the effect on the performance of a turbosupercharged engine of an exhaust-gas-to-air heat exchanger installed between the engine-exhaust collector ring and the turbosupercharger. The background, results, and discussion of the investigation are described.
