Plutonium concentrations in airborne soil at Rocky Flats and Hanford

Description: The objective of this paper is to summarize measured resuspension concentrations and to consider the implications of these results. In these experiments, airborne concentrations were measured as functions of wind speed, airborne particle size, wind direction, and the collected-plutonium and other nuclides per gram of airborne soil. Airborne radionuclides were normalized by the total amount of airborne solids to relate concentration per gram of airborne solid to concentration per gram of radionu… more

Gas cooled fast reactor

Description: Although most of the development work on fast breeder reactors has been devoted to the use of liquid metal cooling, interest has been expressed for a number of years in alternative breeder concepts using other coolants. One of a number of concepts in which interest has been retained is the Gas-Cooled Fast Reactor (GCFR). As presently envisioned, it would operate on the uranium-plutonium mixed oxide fuel cycle, similar to that used in the Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR), and would use … more

Evaluation of coagulant aids at high pH

Description: A series of tests was run on influent to the waste treatment facility, using various polyelectrolytes and organic polymeric coagulant aids. The influent wastewater originates in chemical process areas, janitorial sinks, process-area locker room showers, floor drains, and from the laundry. Previous tests on this waste had shown that Fe{sup +3} and Ca{sup +2} at pH 11.3 gave improved product quality. However, a suitable coagulant aid for use at high pH`s was needed to obtain a rapid settling rate… more

Flux limiting nature`s own way -- A new method for numerical solution of the transport equation

Description: The transport equation may be solved by expanding it in spherical harmonics, Y{sub lm}, and truncating the resultant infinite set of equations at some finite order L. This procedure leaves the (L + 1)th order moments which appear in the Lth order equation undetermined, and the standard procedure for obtaining a closed set of equations has been to set all the (L + 1)th order moments to zero. It has been shown here that this procedure actually violates the apriori knowledge that one is solving fo… more

Proposal to process RTNS-II accelerator targets for LLL

Description: This proposal is submitted in response to a programmatic need at LLL for a supplier of 50-cm targets (tritided) for the new RTNS-II facility. Previous letters of inquiry to Mound also delineate a need for recovery of tritium from expended RTNS-II targets. As explained in this proposal, the tritided target manufacturing and tritium recovery can be accomplished in an efficient and timely manner at Mound Facility. Mound has been a major tritium handling facility for over 20 yr. Multigram quantitie… more

Numerical Modeling of Suprathermal Electron Transport in Laser-Produced Plasmas. Report Number 36

Description: Supra-thermal electrons can radically alter the dynamics of imploding laser fusion targets by preheating the target material, by transforming energy to a rapid ion blowoff or, due to mean free path effects, decoupling the core from the corona. In order to correctly simulate the dynamics of a laser driven target, it is necessary to develop an accurate physical and computational model of these electrons. The difficulties inherent in this problem can be appreciated by noting that the supra-thermal… more

Estimated discard limits for plutonium-238 recovery processing in the plutonium processing building

Description: This manual is intended as a basis for plutonium-238 recovery costs and as a guide for removal of plutonium-bearing wastes from the gloveboxes to be safely and economically discarded. Waste materials contaminated with plutonium-238 are generated from in-house production, analytical, process development, recovery and receipts from off-site. The contaminated materials include paper, rags, alpha-box gloves, piping, valves, filters, etc. General categories for all types of plutonium waste have been… more

The use of calorimetry in nuclear materials management

Description: A calorimeter is a device to measure evolved or adsorbed heat. For our purposes, the heat measured is that associated with radioactive decay and the unit of measurement is the watt. Each time an atom decays, energy is released and absorbed by the surroundings and heat generated. For each isotope, this heat is a constant related to the energy of the decay particles and the half-life of the isotope. A point which is often overlooked is that calorimetry is one of the oldest techniques known for me… more

Cyclone incinerator development program for July 1976

Description: Effort continues to determine the parameters for maximizing the operating efficiency of the off-gas systems and the venturi scrubber. Results for the month show a decrease in particulate emissions from the system. Engineering designs are being finalized for enclosures to permit the introduction of radioactive waste into the incinerator and the handling of the resultant ash. Concurrent with these improvements, the cooling system capacity will be increased to handle more heat in the off-gas as a … more

Analytical study of TATB preheating methods

Description: TATB (1,3,5 - triamino 2,4,6 - Trinitrobenzene) is a very stable explosive that is remarkably insensitive to severe impact and thermal environment. Experiments on its initiation and detonation characteristics have found it difficult to initiate under the energy transfer of thin flyer plates accelerated by electrically exploded metal foils. Figure 1 shows the propagation of a detonation front in such an experiment. Generally, the detonation waves are confined in the region directly in front of t… more

Tritiated liquid waste packaging

Description: An improved method for packaging tritiated waste liquids for burial is described and evaluated. The packaging procedure virtually eliminates tritium exposures to personnel and the environment. The package is shown to be more than adequate for burial of tritiated liquid wastes. Calculations based on tests of the package indicate that the maximum tritium released during 85 yr (seven half-lives of tritium) burial would be 0.002% of the total tritium contained in the package or approximately 1.6 Ci… more

Acceptable TRU packaging for interim storage and/or terminal isolation

Description: The major objective of ERDA Manual Chapter 0511 is responsible technical management of its radioactive wastes. To ensure long term technical management, this DOE responsibility initially begins with the generation of radioactive wastes in all DOE operations and includes all other attributes and parameters (waste processing, packaging, shipping and storage) over the lifetime of the radionuclides. Close examination of the entire waste management cycle clearly indicates that one of the most import… more

Calorimetric assay of reactor grade PuO{sub 2}

Description: This paper describes an experiment to estimate random and systematic errors in determining the effective specific power of plutonium. Precisons and accuracies comparable to coulometric assay were demonstrated for a wide range of plutonium isotopic compositions. Thus, calorimetric assay can provide an effective method for plutonium assay of materials in the nuclear fuel cycle.
