NACA Conference on Aircraft Loads, Structures, and Flutter

NACA Conference on Aircraft Loads, Structures, and Flutter

Date: March 5, 1957
Creator: unknown
Description: This document contains reproductions of technical papers on some of the most recent research results on aircraft loads, flutter, and structures from the NACA laboratories. These papers were presented by members of the staff of the NACA laboratories at the Conference held at the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory March 5, 6, and 7, 1957. The primary purpose of this Conference was to convey to contractors of the military services and others concerned with the design of aircraft these recent research results and to provide those attending an opportunity to discuss the results. The papers in this document are in the same form in which they were presented at the Conference in order to facilitate their prompt distribution. The original presentation and this record are considered as complementary to, rather than as substitutes for, the Committee?s more complete and formal reports. Accordingly, if information from this document is utilized it is requested that this document not be listed as a reference. Individual reports dealing with most of the information presented at the Conference will subsequently be published by NACA and will therefore be suitable as reference material.

Date: November 1, 1955
Creator: unknown
Description: This document contains reproductions of technical papers presented by staff members of the NACA Laboratories at the NACA Conference on Aerodynamics of High-Speed Aircraft held at the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory November 1, 2, and 3, 1955. The primary purpose of the conference was to convey to contractors of the military services and others concerned with the design of aircraft the results of recent research and to provide those attending with an opportunity to discuss these results. The papers in this document are in the same form in which they were orally presented at the conference to facilitate their prompt distribution. The original presentation and this record are considered as complementary to, rather than as substitutes for, the Committee's more complete and formal reports.

The danger of stalled flight and an analysis of the factors which govern it

The danger of stalled flight and an analysis of the factors which govern it

Date: November 1, 1921
Creator: Hopf, L
Description: A definition of "stalled fight" is presented as well as a detailed discussion on the how and why it occurs. Some suggestions are made to prevent its occurrence such as carrying an air speed instrument in the airplane.

Pressure measurements during flight

Pressure measurements during flight

Date: November 1, 1922
Creator: Proll, A
Description: The general idea was to record the air pressure on the spot, that is, without intervening tubes, by some simple automatic registering device. This was therefore made in such small dimensions that it could be inserted into the wing between the ribs and stand in direct connection with the pressure openings. The results of different experiments are presented along with the best locations for locating the instruments for recording the pressure.

Recent progress in the theory of air flow as applied to aeronautics

Recent progress in the theory of air flow as applied to aeronautics

Date: January 1, 1922
Creator: Prandtl, L
Description: In summing up it may be said that the hydrodynamic theories are best confirmed by experimental results for bodies with small resistance or drag and can accordingly be used in place of experimental tests.

Dependence of propeller efficiency on angle of attack of propeller blade

Dependence of propeller efficiency on angle of attack of propeller blade

Date: January 1, 1921
Creator: Borck, Hermann
Description: In order to determine the maximum and the most favorable pitch for a propeller, it was found desirable to investigate the dependence of propeller efficiency on the angle of attack of the propeller blade. The results of a few experiments are given to show that propeller blades conduct themselves just like airplane wings with reference to the dependence of their efficiency on their angle of attack.

Marking airdromes

Date: February 1, 1922
Creator: James, P
Description: Necessity of adopting for all aviation fields, civil or military, a single system of markers for giving the direction for starting and landing (with an automatic indicator of the direction of the wind) and of indicating the good part of the field.

The efficiency of a wind tunnel

The efficiency of a wind tunnel

Date: February 1, 1922
Creator: Miller, Wm H
Description: If, by some means, a steady state of motion of a perfect fluid were established in an ideal wind tunnel, there would be no losses, and the motion would persist indefinitely. In the actual tunnel, the function of the motor-fan group is overcome by the total loss of head in the tube due to friction and eddies.

Resume of the theory of naval and aerial propulsive propellers and of airplanes in the rectilinear flight

Resume of the theory of naval and aerial propulsive propellers and of airplanes in the rectilinear flight

Date: April 1, 1921
Creator: Rateau, A
Description: Though dissimilar, these two subjects have been united because they have some points in common. The computation of the movement of an airplane can only be correctly established if we are in a position to know exactly the thrust and resisting torque of the propeller for the various values of slip, which may vary greatly according to circumstance. The first part of the work concerns propellers and introduces as a fundamental variable, the true slip (delta) with respect to the effective pitch, which is the advance per revolution of the propeller corresponding to no thrust. The second part deals with characteristic curves of an airplane.
