Aerodynamic Loads on Tails at High Angles of Attack and Sideslip

Description: "Results are presented for the loads and moments acting on the individual tail surfaces of a body-tail combination over a wide range of angles of attack and sideslip. The effects of forebody length and panel-panel interference on the characteristics are included. It is shown that large nonlinear variations in these loads and moments, which occur at some combinations of angle of attack and sideslip, cannot be predicted by low-angle theory" (p. 1).

Calculation of External-Store Loads and Correlation With Experiment

Description: Memorandum presenting a theory for evaluating the mutual interference between a wing and tip tank as extended to apply to store-pylon configurations. By using the theory and the flow-field formulas of a previous report, theoretical store-pylon side-force estimates have been made for a number of store-pylon configurations. The minimization of wave drag for wings and bodies with given base area or volume

Description: "The minimization of wave drag for thin aerodynamic shapes carrying no lift is studied for conditions under which either base area or volume is specified. When volume alone is given, the analysis is limited to shapes with straight trailing edges normal to the stream direction. The problem of minimization is reduced to one of finding a two-dimensional harmonic function with known boundary conditions" (p. 1).

Description: "To help fill the gap in the knowledge of aerodynamics of shapes intermediate between bodies of revolution and flat triangular wings, force and moment characteristics for elliptic cones have been experimentally determined for Mach numbers of 1.97 and 2.94. Elliptic cones having cross-sectional axis ratios from 1 through 6 and with lengths and base areas equal to circular cones of fineness ratios 3.67 and 5 have been studied for angles of bank of 0 degree and 90 degrees. The Frequency Content of the Control Input and Airplane Response Obtained During Service Operations of Fighter Airplanes

Description: "The frequency content of the control input and resulting airplane motions is presented as power spectral densities for one operational flight of the fighter airplane (Republic F-84G). The frequency content, which is described by the shape of the spectrum, may be useful in providing inputs for the design of power control systems. For normal load factors, the results presented for the operational flight considered are in general agreement with the results of more complete data on three fighter a… more

Experimental investigation of effects of moderate sideslip on the flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at low speed

Description: The flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at moderate angles of sideslip (plus-or-minus 8 degrees), as determined experimentally at low speed, are presented as variations with chordwise distance for various spanwise and vertical locations and angles of attack. The results indicated that for positions close to the fuselage (on and near the plane of symmetry) changes in the angle of sideslip caused large changes in the flow-field characteristics and particularly in the loca… more

Reflection and Refraction of Acoustic Waves by a Shock Wave

Description: "The presence of sound waves in one or the other of the fluid regions on either side of a shock wave is made apparent, in the region under superpressure, by acoustic waves (reflected or refracted according to whether the incident waves lie in the region of superpressure or of subpressure) and by thermal waves. The characteristics of these waves are calculated for a plane, progressive, and uniform incident wave. In the case of refraction, the refracted acoustic wave can, according to the inciden… more

Performance Evaluation of Reduced-Chord Rotor Blading as Applied to J73 Two-Stage Turbine

Description: "The multistage turbine from the J73 turbojet engine has previously been investigated with standard and with reduced-chord rotor blading in order to determine the individual performance characteristics of each configuration over a range of over-all pressure ratio and speed. Because both turbine configurations exhibited peak efficiencies of over 90 percent, and because both units had relatively wide efficient operating ranges, it was considered of interest to determine the performance of the fir… more
