Spectroscopy of Uranyl Salts in the Solid State

Description: From Introduction: "The interpretation of the fluorescence and absorption spectrum of the uranyl ion, indicated in this introduction, is based on the spectroscopic work of Nichols, Howes and co-workers (1914-1919), Dieke and van Heel (1925), Moerman and Kraak (1939), and Freymann and co-workers (1946-1948); on infrared studies (cf., Section 3 below) and Raman spectra; but most of all, on the work of Dieke, Duncan, and co-workers, carried out in 1943-1944 under the Manhattan District program. Roll Cladding Uranium-Zirconium and Uranium-Zirconium-Niobium Alloys with Zircaloy-2 for Plate-Type Fuel Elements

Description: From Abstract: "Investigations were made of alternate methods of bonding fuel shapes and the use of alternate core alloys in flat plates. Alternations and additions were made to development facilities needed to fabricate roll-clad plates for the EBWR core. Pilot production of EWBR-type plates proved that the plate cladding process could be adapted to production facilities."

Resistance of Materials to Attack by Liquid Metals

Description: From Forward: "As their contribution, the Metallurgy Division of Argonne National Laboratory was asked to assemble all available unclassified and declassifiable data on the resistance of materials to attack by liquid metals. The resulting collation of data is contained in this report."

On The Steady-State Thermal Stresses in Cylindrical Fuel Pins Due to Axial Variations in Their Internal Heat-Generation Rate

Description: From Introduction: "Specifically, we shall be concerned with the case of a solid right circular cylinder of infinite axial extent, having a stress-free outer boundary, being cooled by a temperature-independent boundary conductance, and having an axial heat-generation rate of form shown in Fig. 1. The inclusion of a radial dependence proportional to I^0(r/L) is only a minor complication in solving the required heat-transfer problem and, for reference, has been included in the solution for the te… more

Two-Phase Heat Transfer With Gas Injection Through A Porous Boundary Surface

Description: From Introduction: "The purpose of this study is to investigate some of the hydrodyamic aspects of two-phase heat transfer in the lower quality range. The results of this study should contribute to a better and more thorough understanding of the processes and mechanisms affecting two-phase heat transfer, and in this way help in improving its prediction."

Propagation of Density Disturbances in Air-Water Flow

Description: From Introduction: "In this work, a forced-circulation air-water loop was employed for investigating the behavior of void perturbations. Upon attaining steady-state conditions, disturbances in the void fraction were superimposed at very low frequencies (~0.4 cps). A better understanding of hydrodynamic transient behavior will generate more confidence in the design of boiling-water reactor systems."

Pictorial Studies of Molecules 1: Molecular Orbital Density Comparisons of H2, Li2, B2, C2, N2, O2, and F2

Description: From Review of Theory: " In practice, a very close approximation to the molecular orbitals can be obtained in this way. Recent calculations of this type, utilizing analysis and computer programs developed by the author, have resulted in the determination of the molecular orbitals for a large number of diatomic molecules in the form of Eq. (2). These functions, which are thought to be very close to the Hartree-Fock (i.e., the molecular orbitals demanded by theory) result, were used in the pictor… more

XLIBIT: ANL Cross-section Library Code

Description: From Introduction: "With the acquisition by the Laboratory of a Control Data 3600 computer in the fall of 1963, a joint reprogramming project was undertaken by the Laboratory's Applied Mathematics Division and the Control Data Corporation to develop one - and two-dimensional diffusion-theory and Sn transport-theory programs for the CDC-3600. The XLIBIT code described in this report was developed as a part of this project. XLIBIT is a CDC-3600 program designed to: 1) Prepare a cross-section libr… more

A Computer Program for the Kinetic Treatment of Radiation-Induced Simultaneous Chemical Reactions

Description: "WR16, a program written in 3600-FORTRAN for a CDC-3600 digital computer, calculates, as a function of time, the concentrations of all the species taking part in the simultaneous first- and second-order chemical reactions occurring during and after exposure to ionizing radiations occurring during and after exposure to ionizing radiation of any chemical system (for example, an aqueous solution). Homogeneous reaction kinetics is assumed for the computation. The variation of electrical conductivit… more

The Electrical Design of the EBR-II

Description: Report that "summarizes the electrical design of the Experimental Breeder Reactor II Facility (EBR-II). It attempts to gather together and present in reasonable detail the essential features and workings of the completed design, and to present a concise overall view of the system" (p. 11).

Automatic Foil Activity Counting Facility and Data-Reduction Program

Description: Report describing a transistorized automatic counting and recording system built for the determination of foil-activation data. Some of the convenience requirements of the system were that the output be more suitable for computer processing, automatic sensing of the type of count recorded, and ready availability of the data at all stages of processing.

Calculations on U235 Fission Product Decay Chains

Description: Report of equations for calculating decay of U235. The introduction states" Calculations have been made on the U235 fission product decay schemes. The results for a typical example, that of a reactor operating at 1000 kilowatts for 180 days, have been tabulated and graphed. General formulae have been used so that the results can be applied for any power level and any time of irradiation" (p. 2).
